Chapter 5

The effect on the room was instantaneous. The sheer, commanding, and terrifying silence that fell over the grand salon stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas reception in a heartbeat.

Every single guest at the reception stopped eating and speaking. Champagne flutes were lowered slowly back to silver trays. The polite, affluent conversation died entirely in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified vacuum. Fifty faces turned toward the towering Christmas tree, their fair skin paling as they watched the mafia boss and his young son.

Dorian Bancroft stopped moving entirely. His entire body went rigid beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at his son, processing the cheerful, helpful words. Then, his dark, observant eyes shifted to the clear glass ornament resting in the boy's hands. He saw the distinct white pills shifting inside.

He knew instantly what they were.

The realization of the absolute, degrading, and lethal betrayal that had occurred in his home cemented itself in his mind. The cinematic light seemed to dim as the calm, composed host was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded king of the syndicate.

Dorian moved with absolute, predatory grace. He stepped deliberately away from Maribel, closing the distance to his son in two long strides. He stood directly beside Caleb, his broad, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over the boy.

He did not yell. He did not explode. The absolute stillness of his muscular frame was infinitely more dangerous than any outburst of rage.

Dorian did not look at his fiancée. He slowly raised his head, his dark eyes sweeping past the frozen guests, and looked directly at Tessa.

He had seen the housemaid's terrified reaction. He had noted her rumpled uniform and disheveled hair. He knew that she held the missing pieces to the puzzle.

"Tessa," Dorian said.

His deep, quiet voice echoed loudly in the dead-silent room. He paused after her name, a controlled, agonizing silence that hung in the bright air like an executioner's blade. He kept his cold, unwavering gaze locked entirely on the broken, exhausted maid standing behind his mother's sofa.

"Who took Elinor's medicine?" Dorian asked.

The question was not born of curiosity; it was a deadly demand for the truth, dripping with the absolute promise of violent retribution.
