Chapter 10

The freezing wind whipped across the grand stone staircase of the Thorn estate, biting through Edward’s thin suit jacket. He stood shivering on the very steps he had proudly commanded for thirty years, entirely broken by the daughter he had deemed worthless.

Linnea stood by the armored SUV, her posture perfectly straight, her hands resting calmly in the pockets of her tailored wool coat. She watched the pathetic, ruined patriarch with absolute, clinical detachment.

"Where are we supposed to go?" Edward choked out, his voice finally losing its arrogant edge, replaced entirely by the desperate, pleading tone of a beggar. The irony was not lost on Linnea. "We have no money. The accounts are frozen. The cars are gone. You can't just leave us in the snow, Linnea. Please."

Linnea tilted her head slightly, her dark, mysterious eyes completely devoid of mercy.

"There is a homeless shelter three miles down the road, on the east side of the city," Linnea stated smoothly. "I recommend you start walking. They serve a very modest, hot dinner at six o'clock. But you will have to wait in line."

She let the words sink in, watching the absolute horror dawn on Marguerite's battered face.

"And Marguerite?" Linnea added, her voice dropping into a chilling, hypnotic cadence. "If you are late, don't worry. I am sure they will let you feast on the scraps."

With that final, devastating blow, Linnea turned her back on her family. She climbed gracefully into the back of the armored SUV, pulling the heavy door shut behind her with a definitive, mechanical thud.

The vehicle immediately began to roll forward, turning smoothly in the large driveway before heading back toward the massive iron gates. Linnea didn't look back to watch her father drop to his knees in the snow, nor did she watch her sister collapse in weeping despair. They were ghosts to her now.

Inside the warm, secure cabin of the SUV, Linnea let out a long, slow breath. The tension she had carried in her shoulders for seven years finally began to dissipate. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her encrypted phone, tapping a single button to connect to the driver.

"Take us home, Marcus," Linnea instructed softly.

"Yes, Ma'am," the deep voice replied from the front seat. "The new security detail is already in place at the penthouse. The children are secure."

"Are they asleep?" Linnea asked, the ruthless CEO instantly vanishing, replaced by the loving mother.

"They are, Ma'am," Marcus confirmed warmly. "They had a large dinner. Your son asked for a second piece of chocolate cake before bed. The nanny obliged."

A genuine, beautiful smile finally broke across Linnea’s face, warming her mysterious features. "Good."

The SUV merged onto the highway, leaving the ruined Thorn estate behind in the darkness. She had successfully burned her toxic family to ashes and secured an empire to protect her children’s future. But as she watched the city lights blur past the tinted windows, her encrypted phone buzzed in her hand.

It was an urgent message from her overseas intelligence team.

Linnea’s smile faded, her eyes turning back to icy steel. She locked the screen of her phone, staring out into the dark night. She had conquered her family, but the true war for the underworld had only just begun. The wolves were circling.
