Chapter 4

The silence in the opulent dining hall was a physical weight, pressing down on the chests of the elite guests who dared not draw a breath. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers suddenly felt incredibly harsh and exposing. The flickering flames of the ivory candles reflected in fifty pairs of wide, shocked eyes.

Dorian Blackwell did not flinch. His broad shoulders remained perfectly still beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at the tears streaming down the housemaid's face, the utter devastation that ruined her neat uniform.

With deliberate, terrifying slowness, Dorian shifted his gaze to the little girl he had adopted, a child Corinne had presented to him as an abandoned orphan in need of a powerful family. He assessed the physical similarities—the shape of the eyes, the fair, rosy skin, the delicate features that mirrored the weeping woman standing beside her.

Dorian looked back at Ava.

"Ava," Dorian said, his voice dropping an octave, echoing across the dead silent room. "Is Lily your daughter?"

"Dorian, darling, please," Corinne stammered, the polished smile completely evaporating from her face. She reached out across the table, her manicured fingers shaking. "The girl is confused! She misunderstood the situation! She has an overactive imagination. She is trying to extort you!"

Dorian did not look at Corinne. He kept his cold, observant eyes fixed on Ava. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular face was suffocating. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.

Ava looked directly at Dorian. She did not speak. The emotional weight of the moment robbed her of her voice. She simply gave a small, jerky nod, her tears falling freely onto her white apron.

Before Dorian could process the full magnitude of the betrayal, Lily spoke again.

The six-year-old girl kept firm hold of Ava’s hand. She did not look at her adoptive father. She looked directly at Corinne, her young face set in lines of quiet, wounded confusion.

"You said Mommy sold me," Lily said.

The child’s words fell into the silent hall like an executioner's blade. Corinne had not only stolen a child; she had systematically poisoned the girl's mind against her real mother while playing the savior for the mafia boss.

Dorian’s broad shoulders went completely rigid beneath his tailored suit. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fingers curled into fists. He stared at the linked hands, the horrific reality of his fiancée's cruelty locking into his mind with terrifying precision.

He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He moved with incredibly gentle, deliberate care. Dorian briefly looked toward Ava and Lily, his dark eyes softening with a quiet, profound tenderness and immense respect for the bond that had survived three years of lies.

Then, Dorian slowly turned his head toward Corinne. The movement was deliberate and terrifying. His jaw tightened slightly; the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held Corinne in a cold, unwavering stare, letting the absolute, suffocating silence of the room execute her entirely.
