Chapter 5

The silence stretching across the grand foyer was absolute and apocalyptic. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed on the burgundy velvet sofas, the festive Christmas Eve reception completely obliterated by the exposure of such calculated cruelty.

Nathan Vale turned his attention away from his fiancée and looked down at the low interior shelf of the antique wardrobe. His sharp, angular face softened for a fraction of a second as he looked at his son.

Moving with a profound, terrifying calm, Nathan reached into the dark space. He carefully lifted Evan from the low shelf, his massive, tattooed hands dwarfing the child's small frame. He pulled the six-year-old boy out of the darkness and into the bright, warm golden light.

Evan immediately wrapped his small arms around his father's neck, burying his tear-stained face against the shoulder of the tailored dark suit. He rested heavily against Nathan, the tension finally leaving his small body as he realized he was safe.

But even in the safety of his father's arms, Evan’s primary need was undeniable. The little boy shifted his weight slightly, turning his head, and reached one small, trembling hand outward.

He reached toward Elise.

Elise let out a ragged, heartbroken sob. She didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, her black maid dress brushing against Nathan’s tailored trousers, and gently took Evan’s outstretched hand. She held his small fingers tightly, offering him the pure, unconditional love that the woman in the emerald gown was completely incapable of providing.

Nathan remained standing perfectly still beside Elise. He held his son securely against his chest with his left arm, while his right side served as an impenetrable physical shield between the gentle maid and the vicious fiancée. It was an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Daphne's authority in a single, fluid movement.

Only then did Nathan slowly turn his head toward Daphne.

His jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his very short stubble. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking the manipulative woman in a silent, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.

Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Daphne’s tightened smile completely disappeared. The color drained from her face as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated.

"Nathan, you must listen to reason," Daphne pleaded, her voice trembling for the first time that evening. "My family brings the entire eastern port to this alliance. You need me. You cannot possibly take the side of a servant over your future wife."

"I need nothing from a woman who tortures children," Nathan replied, his voice a low, vibrating hum of impending violence.

He shifted his dark, intense gaze from the ruined woman to the fifty elite guests seated around the massive room.

"This reception is concluded," Nathan stated, his authority absolute. "Everyone who does not carry the Vale name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this estate immediately."

Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women paled in terror as they abandoned their champagne glasses and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of Vale violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia war.
