Chapter 4

The opulent drawing room was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their gilded candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Estelle’s luxurious emerald gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had completely evaporated, leaving behind a feral mask of desperation and cornered panic.
"That is an outrageous lie!" Estelle shouted, stepping forward, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. The aristocratic polish was completely gone. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Victor! I have never laid a hand on your mother! She is resting comfortably in a clinic in Switzerland! I have the paperwork to prove it!"
Victor did not look at Estelle. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands stood out starkly as he moved with a profound, terrifying calm. He stepped smoothly between Estelle and the low table, positioning his broad, masculine body deliberately beside Marin and Sadie. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Estelle's authority in a single, fluid movement.
Victor reached out his left hand, slowly extending an open palm toward Estelle. He did not ask for an explanation. He did not ask for the forged paperwork. He held her gaze with a cold, unwavering stare.
He extended his open hand directly toward the small brass key hanging conspicuously from the chain of her designer evening clutch.
"Give me the key, Estelle," Victor commanded slowly.
Estelle’s smile disappeared entirely, her face draining of color as she realized her meticulously crafted coup had failed spectacularly. The room held its breath, suspended in silence, waiting for the apex predator to strike.
"Victor, you must listen to reason," Estelle pleaded, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism as she desperately tried to regain control, her hand covering the brass key protectively. "Even if I did move her, it was for the good of the syndicate! She was draining the accounts! She was weak! It makes you look weak to the other families to fund a dying woman!"
"Do you believe," Victor began, speaking so slowly that every syllable landed like a physical blow across her face, "that I require the financial advice of a woman who tortures my blood behind my back?"
"I am your fiancée!" Estelle shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the edge of a carved walnut table. "I am the daughter of the Vane syndicate! You cannot treat me like a common criminal in front of your capos! I demand respect, Victor!"
"Respect is earned," Victor replied, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed off the cream marble columns. "And you have earned nothing but my absolute disgust. Hand me the key, or I will let my men take it from you."
He shifted his dark, intense gaze from the ruined woman to the fifty elite guests seated around the massive room. The warm fairy lights from the towering Christmas tree twinkled in the background, a stark contrast to the violence promised in his eyes.
"This reception is concluded," Victor stated. "Everyone who does not carry the Hawthorne name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this room immediately."
Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women with fair, rosy skin paled in terror as they abandoned their fine wine and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia war.

"Victor, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Estelle hissed, attempting to salvage her dignity as the room rapidly emptied. "My father will hear of this. The Vane family will not tolerate this level of public disrespect."
"I would burn every asset your family owns before I let you sleep under my roof again," Victor replied coldly.
