Chapter 9

They did not take Sadie.

That told me something.

Whatever happened next required Gloria without the child.

Pierce swore.

Anthony looked unsurprised.

I turned toward him.

“Sit.”

He did.

Good.

Not confidence.

He knew his part was over.

I sent Thomas to lock the estate.

Then checked the children.

Both safe upstairs.

Calvin was crying.

Sadie was feeding him crackers.

That image stayed with me.

The child being told she was less important was comforting the child being raised to believe he was more important.

Children expose adult stupidity without trying.

I returned downstairs.

Anthony remained seated.

“Where did Victor take Gloria?”

He shrugged.

I stepped closer.

“Don’t.”

His expression changed.

“Old chapel.”

Pierce looked up.

Of course.

Every Mafia family has an old room where dead men are somehow given permission to keep voting.

“What happens there?”

Anthony sighed.

“The council meets.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“With Gloria?”

“She presents household evidence.”

I stared.

“What evidence?”

“Sadie.”

My jaw tightened.

Not physically.

As a case.

Her meals.

Behavior.

How often I changed plans for her.

How much staff attention she received.

Every normal parental decision turned into proof I could not separate fatherhood from leadership.

I almost laughed.

“And Calvin?”

“Comparison.”

There it was.

Two children turned into exhibits.

One disciplined.

One indulged.

One future.

One weakness.

I looked at Pierce.

“You knew?”

“No.”

I believed him.

His shock was real.

Anthony continued.

“Victor wants the seven-man council restored before dawn.”

“And if I refuse?”

“It becomes six against one.”

“That’s not authority.”

“It is if enough captains obey them.”

True.

Power is never a chair.

It is people deciding which voice moves them.

I looked at Anthony.

“Do you support them?”

He hesitated.

That was more interesting than yes.

“Why?”

He rubbed his jaw.

“I thought you were changing too much.”

“And now?”

He looked toward the ceiling.

Toward Calvin.

“I didn’t know Gloria was starving Sadie’s dignity to make Calvin look stronger.”

Good phrase.

His face changed when he said it.

Maybe he heard himself.

“I thought she was strict.”

“That’s how everyone describes cruelty until they see who benefits.”

Anthony looked away.

Then he said:

“Victor plans to offer you a choice.”

I almost smiled.

“Of course.”

“Restore the council voluntarily.”

“Or?”

“Lose control of the family.”

I looked toward the dark windows.

No.

That was not the real choice.

The real choice was whether I would let them make Sadie’s childhood the price of my leadership.

That answer was already decided.
