Chapter 14

I brought everyone back to the house before dawn.

Not for punishment.

For breakfast.

That seemed appropriate.

Sadie came downstairs sleepy, hair messy, cardigan buttoned wrong.

Perfect.

Calvin came too.

Anthony walked beside him.

Gloria sat at one end of the table.

Victor at the other.

No bodyguards looming over the children.

Just near the walls.

I asked the chef to bring breakfast.

Same plates.

Same portions.

Same food.

Sadie looked at Calvin’s plate.

Then hers.

Identical.

She smiled.

Small.

That nearly undid me.

Gloria noticed.

I looked at her.

“You see that?”

She said nothing.

“That is what you were fighting.”

Her face hardened.

“Equality?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“A child noticing she isn’t being deliberately given less.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You turned a succession crisis into breakfast.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You turned breakfast into a succession crisis.”

Anthony almost smiled.

Good.

Calvin asked:

“Am I still important?”

The room froze.

There.

Damage on both sides.

Not only Sadie.

Calvin had been fed superiority so consistently he thought equal food meant reduced importance.

Anthony crouched beside him.

“Yes.”

Calvin looked at Sadie.

“Is she?”

Anthony swallowed.

“Yes.”

Calvin thought about it.

“Same?”

I answered.

“Not same person.”

He looked at me.

“Same important?”

“Yes.”

Simple.

He accepted it.

Adults made this hard.

Gloria looked away.

I understood then what I needed to do.

Not only remove her access.

Undo the environment.

“Victor loses all advisory channels.”

His jaw tightened.

“Gloria loses financial access and unsupervised contact with Sadie.”

She stood.

“You can’t—”

“I can.”

She looked around for support.

None.

“Anthony retains no succession role for Calvin unless Calvin chooses family involvement as an adult.”

Anthony nodded.

Good.

“Pierce loses household authority for carrying Gloria’s instructions.”

He accepted it.

Then I looked at the children.

“Neither of you is responsible for fixing anything these adults did.”

Calvin frowned.

Sadie ate eggs.

Probably the healthiest response in the room.

Gloria stared at me.

“You think this ends because everyone eats the same breakfast?”

“No.”

May you like

I leaned back.

“It ends because from now on, you don’t decide what less looks like for my daughter.”
