Chapter 14

We reopened the climbing club after renovation.
Finn refused the wall.
Fine.
No one pushed.
For months he played only on the foam blocks.
Then one morning, he pointed at the low wall.
“Up.”
My heart tightened.
The instructor fitted his harness.
I checked the clip.
Then stopped myself.
Finn noticed.
“Mom?”
I smiled.
“You check.”
The instructor showed him.
Clip closed.
Mat centered.
Hands ready.
Finn climbed two holds.
Stopped.
Looked down.
No laughter.
No Patrick directing Brielle.
No Declan evaluating weakness.
Just people waiting.
He climbed one more.
Then said:
“Done.”
The instructor lowered him.
Everyone clapped.
Finn frowned.
“Why clap?”
Fair.
We stopped.
Normal.
That was what I wanted.
Not every child action becoming a family symbol.
Patrick watched from the back.
He did not approach.
Later Finn ran to him anyway.
“Grandpa, three.”
He held up three fingers.
Patrick smiled.
“Three holds?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
No speech about strength.
No Bellandi—Costello legacy nonsense.
Just good.
Brielle climbed afterward.
Not to prove anything.
Because she liked it.
Finn yelled:
“Don’t move mat!”
The entire room went quiet.
Then Brielle looked down.
“I won’t.”
Finn nodded.
That was enough.
The memory remained.
May you like
But it no longer controlled the room.
That felt like healing.
