Chapter 5

Celeste had been promised the conservatory.
Not the building.
The network around it.
The donors who funded Morello charities, private schools, garden estates, cultural foundations, and hospitality fronts all passed through this place eventually. My mother used to call it the soft side of Morello power.
Celeste wanted it.
Victor promised it.
“If Owen was judged unfit,” she said finally, “the family needed someone to supervise his development.”
I stared.
“You.”
She lifted her chin.
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
“You think throwing him into a pond qualifies you to raise him?”
“That’s not what I said.”
“It’s exactly what you demonstrated.”
Her face hardened.
Victor interrupted.
“Celeste understands discipline.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
Then at her.
“She understands obedience to you.”
That landed.
Celeste stepped away from him slightly.
Good.
I kept going.
“What happens to me in your version?”
Neither answered.
Raymond did.
“Temporary step-back.”
I turned.
His face was embarrassed now.
He had believed it.
“Explain.”
Victor had told selected donors I was considering reducing my role to focus on motherhood. The Water Lesson would supposedly prove whether the transition needed to happen immediately.
I smiled.
“I never considered stepping back.”
Raymond looked at Victor.
His expression changed.
Another lie.
Victor was not testing a possibility.
He was manufacturing consent for something I had never wanted.
“And Celeste becomes Owen’s family supervisor.”
Raymond nodded.
“For how long?”
Silence.
That was enough.
Until he was old enough to become useful.
Or until Victor found someone else.
I looked at Celeste.
“You weren’t getting the conservatory.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“He promised.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“He promised you responsibility without ownership.”
She glanced at Victor.
There.
First doubt.
I continued.
“He needs you blamed if today becomes ugly.”
Victor’s face hardened.
“Valentina.”
“No.”
I looked at Celeste.
“Who physically pushed Owen?”
She said nothing.
“Who laughed?”
Silence.
“Who tried to reach him again after he was safe?”
Her jaw tightened.
“Who will every witness remember?”
She finally looked at Victor.
Not me.
Good.
She understood.
Victor had restrained me.
But Celeste had performed the cruelty.
If the plan succeeded, he gained influence.
If it failed, she became the unstable cousin who went too far.

He had built his protection into her ambition.
And she had nearly drowned a child for a promotion that never existed.
