Chapter 12

Celeste asked for nothing.

That surprised me.

No invitation back.

No forgiveness.

No access to Owen.

She sent one message through Thomas:

I found the old garden photographs.

I knew immediately which ones.

Victor had documented family children for decades during his so-called lessons.

Not official records.

Personal photographs.

Boys standing soaked beside fountains.

Girls holding trays during donor dinners.

Children forced to pose after crying so adults could praise composure.

I looked through them once.

Then stopped.

The cruelty was repetitive.

Boring.

That somehow made it worse.

One photograph showed Celeste at eight.

Alone in the conservatory after dark.

Face swollen from crying.

Victor standing behind her with one hand on her shoulder.

Caption in his handwriting:

FEAR CORRECTED.

I stared at it.

No.

Fear hidden.

Different thing.

Another showed my mother Lucia beside her younger brother after the old Water Lesson.

Both soaked.

My mother furious.

Victor in the background.

Expression hard.

That was the beginning.

He had spent forty-five years trying to undo the moment a teenage girl publicly proved his tradition dangerous.

My mother had won once.

He simply waited for the next generation.

I took the photographs to Celeste.

She lived at a smaller Morello property now.

No authority.

No family events.

She looked at her childhood picture.

“I remember that dress.”

I said nothing.

“I hated green after.”

Small detail.

Pain leaves weird footprints.

She looked at me.

“I did to Owen what he did to me.”

“Yes.”

She cried.

Again, I did not rescue her from the sentence.

Then she asked:

“Do you think he’ll ever forgive me?”

“Owen?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know.”

She nodded.

“Do you?”

“No.”

That hurt.

Good.

Not forever necessarily.

Just true now.

She looked at the photograph again.

“I thought repeating it meant I survived correctly.”

I understood.

But understanding is not the same as returning trust.

Before I left, I told her:

“If you want to change, do it without needing Owen to witness it.”

That was her work now.

Private.

May you like

Long.

Unrewarded.
