Chapter 3

The fabric fell away, pooling against the polished walnut wood. Resting flat on the table, gleaming menacingly under the warm golden light of the crystal chandeliers, was a heavy, loaded pistol.
A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests. The silence in the grand dining room became a physical, suffocating pressure. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Crowne empire shattered.
Anita left the pistol completely untouched. She pulled her hand back, standing tall in her sophisticated black maid dress. She looked directly at the mafia boss, her delicate cheekbones pale, her lips trembling slightly under the overwhelming tension of the room.
"A real gun," Anita said, her voice fragile but devastatingly clear.
Maxwell moved with lethal fluidity. He rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair, placing his towering, broad-shouldered frame deliberately between Lucille and both Anita and his son. His dark tailored suit acted as a massive, physical shield, cutting off the socialite's line of sight to the trembling boy. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his knuckles on the edge of the table.
Before Lucille could formulate a lie to explain the weapon, a small, broken voice broke the tableau.
Bobby, still sitting rigidly in his formal dinner jacket, slowly turned his head. The little boy’s fair cheeks were stained with tears gathering rapidly along his lower eyelids. He looked directly at Lucille, bypassing his father's protective frame.
"You made me shoot Grandpa," Bobby said.
The childish American accent sliced through the heavy silence, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty of the woman in the sculpted satin gown. He spoke softly, but with a frightened, unshakable certainty.
Maxwell froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His cold eyes looked briefly toward the pistol resting on the table, the reality of his father's unsolved murder six months prior finally cementing itself in his mind. The assassination hadn't been a rival family; it had been an inside job, executed by the most innocent hand in the house.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Maxwell shifted his gaze. The movement was predatory, his eyes moving first toward Lucille, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.
He held Lucille’s eyes in a cold, furious stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath. Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Maxwell Crowne.
