Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Alma’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hands clutching the crisp white fabric of her apron. She had risked her life to pull this exhausted woman out of the dark, and now, standing under the scrutiny of the mafia boss, she felt the sheer, terrifying magnitude of her action.

Alma maintained eye contact with Nolan. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, observant eyes, which were searching her softly oval face with a piercing intensity. Her expressive brows drew together in a mixture of fear and resolute defiance. Her lips trembled slightly, but she refused to back down.

Before Alma could force the words past the lump in her throat, Daria intervened.

Daria smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the upholstery. She met Nolan’s stunned gaze with a faint, reassuring smile, projecting the image of a bewildered, deeply concerned wife attempting to shield her reputation from a cruel, unhinged interruption.

"My sister’s confused, darling," Daria stated, her delivery carefully measured, laced with a melodic, dismissive sweetness that perfectly mimicked Lydia's voice.

She offered the lie with practiced perfection, but her eyes frantically searched Nolan’s angular face for any sign of agreement, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the exhausted woman and the housemaid.

Nolan did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. Pushing his chair back, he rose slowly to his full, imposing height. He stepped smoothly into the space between the two women, placing his broad shoulders and tailored dark suit directly between Daria and the pair on his right, forming an impenetrable wall.

Alma took a shallow breath, realizing she now had the protection of the most dangerous man in the city. She rested a gentle, supportive hand on the trembling shoulder of the woman in the cardigan.

"This is Lydia," Alma said. Her voice was quiet, fragile, but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room. "Your wife."

A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The anniversary celebration, the event that was meant to solidify the Westbrook syndicate, was suddenly being torn apart by an unbelievable deception right at the head table.

The tension in the room snapped, not with a roar, but with a quiet, exhausted accusation.

Lydia, emboldened by the massive frame of Nolan shielding her, looked past the mafia boss, looking directly at the identical woman in the satin gown. Her trembling fingers suddenly became still, clutching the edges of her worn shawl.

"You chained me downstairs," Lydia said.

She spoke quietly, without looking away from her twin. The words emerged with wounded certainty, lacking triumph or malice, merely a statement of absolute, irrefutable fact from a woman who had spent two weeks in the freezing dark.

Nolan’s cold eyes snapped down to Lydia. He held her gaze for a brief, incredibly motionless beat. He absorbed the sheer vulnerability in her posture, the undeniable truth written across her tear-streaked, exhausted face. His gaze flicked down for a fraction of a second, noticing the faint, bruised restraint marks surrounding her pale wrists.

Then, Nolan slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Daria.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck became visible above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed into unyielding granite. His expression became completely still, settling into a cold, controlled fury that swallowed all the golden light in the room.

He held Daria’s eyes in unwavering silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the monstrous rot underneath. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
