Chapter 6

Victoria pushed herself up onto her elbows, spitting a mouthful of white frosting onto the pristine marble floor. The aristocratic, untouchable matriarch was completely destroyed. She stared up at her son, genuine, unadulterated terror finally breaking through her arrogant facade.

"Alexander, please," Victoria whimpered, her American accent cracking as she tried to wipe the cake from her eyes. "You don't understand. The child is difficult. The money... the money was needed for the estate maintenance. She doesn't need expensive tutors and chefs! I was teaching her discipline!"

"You starved my daughter to steal her trust fund," Alexander deduced, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. Every word sounded measured, cold, and immensely dangerous.

"She is a liability!" Victoria shrieked, desperate to justify her treason. "Her mother was a nobody, Alexander! She tainted our bloodline! I was trying to prepare her for the reality of our world! You coddle her!"

Sophia peeked out from Alexander’s shoulder, her small body shaking violently against his chest. She looked at her grandmother bleeding in the cake, and then she slowly raised a trembling, tiny finger.

She pointed directly at Victoria.

Her champagne glass, which Victoria had somehow managed to hold onto during the crash, slipped from her trembling hand. It hit the marble floor, shattering with a sharp, piercing crash that echoed through the quiet room.

Alexander followed his daughter’s finger, his cold eyes locking onto the broken glass, and then slowly rising to meet his mother’s terrified gaze.

"Dad..." Sophia whispered. Her voice was reduced to a terrified, broken whisper, barely audible over the ringing silence, but to Alexander, it sounded like a siren. "Dad... Grandma is the one who... killed Mom."
