Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Sterling grand ballroom cast a brilliant, pure white light over the evening’s gala. There was no warm filter, no golden hour hue to soften the edges of the room; the cinematic illumination was crisp and unforgiving, highlighting the vivid colors of the event. The elite of the city, all white American adults dressed in impeccable black-tie evening attire, drifted across the polished marble floor. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with wealth and privilege as they murmured in sophisticated American accents, sipping champagne served by staff in sharp black-and-white uniforms.
Outside the opulent double doors, in the dimly lit service corridor leading to the alleyway, the contrast was absolute.
Thirty-two-year-old Alexander Sterling, head of the Sterling empire, pushed open the heavy service door. He was a man of terrifying, deeply masculine power, as devastatingly handsome as a classic movie star. He wore a flawlessly tailored formal suit, a crisp dress shirt, a silk tie, and polished shoes. A luxury wristwatch caught the faint light from the alley. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were usually set in an expression of cold, unyielding authority.
But as he stepped into the service corridor, the air was suddenly driven from his lungs.
A tiny figure was crouched by the industrial trash receptacles. It was his four-year-old daughter, Sophia.
She was barefoot on the cold, damp concrete. The elegant, pale-pink party dress she had been wearing earlier in the evening was now faded, stained with grease and dirt. She was frantically rummaging through a discarded catering bag.
Alexander’s heart slammed against his ribs. He moved with a sudden, explosive speed, closing the distance in three massive strides. He reached down and gently, but firmly, pulled her away from the garbage.
Sophia gasped, her tiny body going rigid with terror. Her small hand was still tightly clutching a discarded, half-eaten chicken bone, her knuckles white from the grip.

Alexander dropped to his knees, heedless of the grime on the concrete ruining his tailored suit trousers. He stared at his daughter. Her rosy cheeks were smeared with dirt, her fair skin pale and shivering. The bright blue eyes that mirrored his own were wide, filled with an agonizing mixture of desperate hope and profound fear.
"Daddy?" Sophia whispered. Her tiny voice cracked, ravaged by a hunger and fear that no child of the Sterling family should ever know.
