Chapter 2

The absolute silence that blanketed the dining hall was deafening. The clinking of silver forks against fine china had completely ceased. The elite guests held their breath, their eyes darting nervously toward the exits. The atmosphere in the grand room had shifted from a celebratory dinner to a potential execution ground in the span of thirty seconds. Matthias Rook’s cold, observant eyes remained locked on Clarice, his silence more terrifying than any shouted threat.

Clarice’s carefully constructed facade began to splinter. The sculpted satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its shimmer as a cold sweat broke out across her collarbones. She let out a high-pitched, nervous laugh that echoed awkwardly against the marble fireplace and the ivory wall panels, her diamond earrings trembling violently.

“Matthias, darling, please,” Clarice stammered, her hands fluttering in front of her as if to physically push the child’s accusation away. “He is just a little boy. He is confused and traumatized by Helen’s abandonment. You cannot possibly entertain this absolute nonsense.”

Matthias did not blink. He slowly withdrew his heavy hands from the polished walnut table, standing perfectly straight. The intricate tattoos on his hands flexed as he adjusted his tailored vest. His deep, quiet voice sliced through the tension, carrying the chilling, interrogative cadence he always employed.

“Do you honestly believe I find amusement in a child’s trauma, Clarice? Do you think I would permit such an accusation to pass without absolute scrutiny?”

“No! No, of course not,” she replied quickly, her eyes darting toward the silent, staring guests before snapping back to him. “But to accuse me of such a horrific act? Here? Tonight? You must see that the boy needs psychological help, not an audience to indulge his tragic fantasies.”

Lorna Hayes remained perfectly still beside Jamie’s velvet chair, her hands folded neatly over her pristine white apron. Despite the danger radiating from the mafia boss, she stood her ground. Her expressive brows drew together in a look of quiet resolve, her delicate cheekbones catching the warm, golden light of the cascading chandeliers. She reached down, placing a gentle, protective hand on Jamie’s trembling shoulder.

Matthias looked out over the sea of frozen, terrified guests. His sharp jaw was set in stone, his high-bridged nose casting a dark shadow over his features. He spoke to the crowd, his tone dangerously calm and commanding.

“Are you all waiting for a formal invitation to leave my dining room? Do you wish to remain seated and involve yourselves in my family’s private affairs?”

The response was instantaneous and chaotic. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floor as dozens of powerful men and women scrambled to their feet. No one wanted to be in the crossfire when Matthias Rook unleashed his legendary wrath. Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four people remaining at the head table and the heavy security detail standing by the doors.

Clarice took a tentative, desperate step toward Matthias, reaching a trembling hand out to touch the dark lapel of his tailored suit.

“Matthias, please, let us go upstairs and discuss this privately,” she pleaded, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “You know how much I love you. You know I would never hurt Jamie.”

Matthias stepped back smoothly, allowing her hand to fall into empty space. His wavy hair caught the candlelight as he tilted his head, his gaze burning right through her polished exterior.

“Why are your hands shaking so violently if this is merely a child’s fantasy? Do you think I am blind to the terror bleeding through your makeup, Clarice?”

“I am simply overwhelmed!” she cried out, genuine panic finally breaking her voice. She spun around to face Lorna, her sorrowful mask melting into a snarl of pure venom. “This is your doing! You put him up to this! You have been filling his head with lies to ruin my position in this house!”

Matthias stepped aggressively between the two women, blocking Clarice’s path to the beautiful housemaid.

“Do you believe you possess the authority to threaten my staff in my presence? Would you care to test my patience any further tonight?”
