Chapter 11

Victor tried Lily next.
Not physically.
With words.
“Which daughter matters more?”
The room went silent.
I stared.
“What?”
“Ava.”
He smiled.
“Firstborn.”
Then:
“Lost child.”
He tilted his head.
“Grace's child.”
Mara stopped breathing.
Victor continued.
“Then Lily.”
His granddaughter.
His own blood.
“Current wife's child.”
I understood the trap.
Divide.
Rank.
Make love into hierarchy.
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“You have to choose eventually.”
“No.”
“Ava will resent Lily.”
“No.”
“Lily will grow up knowing Ava came first.”
“No.”
Mara whispered:
“Ryan.”
I ignored her.
Victor continued.
“One mother dead.”
“One mother disgraced.”
His eyes sharpened.
“Children keep score.”
I stepped closer.
“Only when adults teach them.”
His smile faded.
Good.
“You built your family that way.”
Silence.
“Winner.”
“Loser.”
“Useful.”
“Useless.”
Victor stared.
“Not mine.”
I looked at Mara.
She lowered her eyes.
Then Marco.
Same.
I continued.
“Ava is my daughter.”
“Lily is my daughter.”
“No ranking.”
Silence.
Victor laughed.
“Sentimental.”
“Yes.”
Again.
I stopped being afraid of the word.
Then Emily entered.
“Boss.”
I turned.
She held the old stuffed rabbit.
Ava had apparently asked for it.
One seam had opened further.
Something small had fallen out.
Not another secret device.
A photograph.
Old.
Grace.
Ava at two.
And—
Mara.
All three standing at a garden table.
My blood went cold.
Mara's face went pale.
I looked at her.
“When?”
She said nothing.
Emily turned the photograph over.
Grace's handwriting.
MARA PROMISED TO HELP ME TELL RYAN.
Silence.
I stared.
“You were Grace's friend.”
Mara's jaw tightened.
Victor looked irritated.
Good.
“What happened?”
Mara looked at the floor.
Not strategy now.
Memory.
“She trusted me.”
“And?”
“I hated it.”
Silence.
There.
Raw.
“She trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“Asked for help.”
“Yes.”
“And you betrayed her.”
Mara's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Victor snapped:
“Enough.”
She turned.
“No.”
He stared.
Mara looked at me.
“She found the Vale names.”
Her voice shook.
“She came to me before she came to you.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew Marco was my brother.”
Silence.
“She thought I would choose her over family.”
I stared.
“And?”
Mara laughed once.
Broken.
“I chose family.”
Victor smiled faintly.
Proud.
That told me everything.
Mara saw it too.
She looked at him.
Something changed.
“You were proud of me.”
Victor said nothing.
“You told me Grace was weak.”
Nothing.
“You said if I helped, Carter would respect me.”
Victor's expression hardened.
Mara whispered:
“You never cared whether Ryan loved me.”
Victor looked away.
There.
Truth.
He needed marriage as access.
Mara had mistaken assignment for worth.
I looked at her.
Again—
explanation.
Not excuse.
She stared at the photograph.
“I told Grace I'd help.”
Silence.
“Then I opened the door for Marco.”
May you like
Ava and Grace were taken because Mara arranged the meeting.
The person Grace trusted most had delivered her into the trap.
