Chapter 1

The engagement reception was bathed in brilliant, natural cinematic lighting that poured through the massive arched windows of the estate. There was no hazy yellow tint to the afternoon sun, only pure, vibrant light that made the bright colors of the floral arrangements pop with life. The private hall was filled entirely with white American adults, their fair and rosy skin glowing against the sharp contrasts of their formal attire. Rich laughter and smooth American accents drifted over the clinking of crystal champagne flutes.
Dante Moretti stood near the center of the room, a pillar of absolute authority. At fifty-four, he possessed a deeply masculine, movie-star handsome face that commanded terror and respect in equal measure. He wore a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit, a crisp dress shirt, and polished leather shoes. The heavy gold of his family signet ring and the sleek face of his luxury wristwatch caught the light as he swirled his bourbon. He watched his empire mingle, his intimidating, sharp eyes missing nothing.
"It is a beautiful afternoon for an engagement, Dante," remarked one of his senior capos, raising a glass.
"The weather is agreeable," Dante replied. His deep, slightly raspy voice carried an effortless authority. "Ensure the perimeter remains secured. I want no uninvited guests."
"Already handled, Boss," the capo assured him.
A few yards away, three-year-old Lily Moretti wandered near the grand piano. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with the excitement of the party. Dressed in an elegant pastel child’s dress, a soft cream cardigan, and pristine flats, she held a small glass of water, watching the adults with wide, innocent eyes.
At the center of the room’s attention sat Victoria Lane. At thirty-five, Dante’s fiancée was undeniably stunning. She wore an exquisite, elegant formal gown that hugged her curves, paired with towering heels. A massive diamond engagement ring flashed on her finger, matching her expensive earrings and bracelet. Smiling radiantly at the gathering crowd, she sat down on the leather bench of the black grand piano.
"For my wonderful future husband," Victoria announced, her confident American accent carrying across the room. "A small piece to celebrate our new beginning."
Victoria raised her hands and began playing a short, delicate melody on the grand piano. The notes were soft, haunting, and incredibly specific.
The moment the first few chords rang out, the atmosphere shifted. Lily froze in her tracks. The little girl’s blue eyes went wide with sudden, unadulterated shock. Her tiny fingers lost their grip. The crystal glass slipped from her hand, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, jarring crash.

"Daddy," Lily cried out, her small voice cutting through the elegant music like a blade. "Daddy… that’s Mommy’s song."
Victoria’s hands slammed down on the keys in a discordant clash. She abruptly stopped playing, the bright smile vanishing from her rosy face.
