Chapter 15

Victoria eventually asked for the luxury cart.

I laughed because I thought she was joking.

She was not.

The same cart Marcus crashed into.

Still scratched.

Still functional.

“What for?”

“Charity.”

Of course.

She had all the designer goods purchased with her care money cleaned, sorted, and packed.

Handbags.

Shoes.

Perfume.

Watches.

Clothing.

Everything.

Not returned to Catherine.

Not kept.

Given away through an elder-support foundation Victoria had quietly funded for years.

I almost smiled.

“Symbolic.”

She looked offended.

“Practical.”

Right.

The cart rolled through the estate one last time piled with expensive boxes.

Marissa pushed it.

Mother walked beside her.

Staff watched.

No speech.

That was better.

Money stolen from elder care became elder care again.

Simple correction.

Later, Marissa returned the empty cart.

She looked at me.

“Boss?”

“Yes?”

“Mrs. Victoria wants to move rooms.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Not because she’s afraid.”

Good.

“Then?”

“She hates that bedroom.”

Fair.

We moved her to the garden suite.

No stained mattress.

No blocked door.

No symbolic reclamation forcing her to sleep where she suffered.

People do not owe places their healing.

The old bedroom became storage temporarily.

Eventually Mother said:

“Make it a reading room.”

So we did.

The dresser Marcus crashed into remained.

Repaired.

Moved against the wall.

No longer blocking anything.

That mattered to me more than it should have.

Objects remember nothing.

May you like

People assign the memory.

I preferred the dresser holding books.
