Chapter 10

Gavin was the only one left. The cavernous parking garage felt suddenly empty, the echoes of the screaming women and the dragging footsteps fading away as the capos executed Alessandra's ruthless commands. Gavin lay alone amidst the wreckage of the court-divider rack and Tobin’s spilled crayons, entirely stripped of his family, his mistress, his hidden son, and his pride.
He stared up at Alessandra, his jaw throbbing with agonizing pain. He had nothing left to bargain with. He had played a dangerous game of treason against a woman who ruled an empire built on blood, and he had lost everything in a matter of minutes.
Alessandra stood over him, her tailored dark pantsuit perfectly crisp despite the extreme violence she had unleashed. The heavy family signet ring gleamed under the bright fluorescent lights. She looked down at him with a profound, terrifying emptiness.
"You really thought you could replace us," Alessandra murmured, the quiet volume of her voice making the words infinitely more devastating. "You looked at the empire I built, at the son I gave you, and decided it wasn't enough. You wanted to be the king."
"Alessandra," Gavin whispered, his voice a pathetic, broken rasp. "I was foolish. I was weak. I'm sorry."
"Sorry is a word for children who break a toy," Alessandra replied coldly, stepping carefully over a scattering of foam training cones. "You didn't break a toy, Gavin. You tortured my son. You let your mother lock him in this freezing concrete box for nine hours. You looked him in the eyes and chose your ambition over his life."
Gavin squeezed his eyes shut, tears streaming down his bruised, rosy cheeks. "What... what are you going to do to me?"
Alessandra slowly unbuttoned the cuffs of her silk blouse, rolling them up her forearms with deliberate, terrifying precision. The simple gesture spoke volumes. She wasn't delegating his punishment to her capos.
"You wanted to be the boss, Gavin," Alessandra stated, her voice dropping to a lethal, icy whisper. "You wanted the respect, the fear, the power. But you never understood the cost. You never understood what it takes to sit at the head of the table."
She reached down, grabbing the lapels of his ruined, expensive tuxedo, and hauled him roughly to his knees. Gavin groaned in pain, his dislocated jaw screaming in agony.
"A true boss protects their blood above all else," Alessandra whispered directly into his ear, the coldness of her breath raising the hairs on his neck. "A true boss eradicates a threat entirely, leaving no roots behind to grow back."
"Please," Gavin whimpered, shivering violently. "I'll disappear. I'll sign the divorce papers. You'll never see me again."
"Oh, you are definitely going to disappear, Gavin," Alessandra agreed softly, her dark eyes flashing with a merciless, predatory light. "But you aren't getting off that easily. You aren't getting a new identity like your mistress."
She let go of his lapels, letting him collapse back into the dirt and spilled drawings. She stood up tall, signaling to Michael Reed, the senior parking supervisor, who had been standing silently by the security desk the entire time.
"Michael," Alessandra called out. "Bring the heavy transport van around to the loading dock."
"Yes, Boss," Michael nodded, immediately speaking into his radio.
Gavin stared at her in sheer terror. "A transport van? Where... where are you taking me?"
Alessandra looked down at him, a dark, devastating smile finally curving her lips. It was a smile that promised unimaginable suffering.
May you like
"To a place where you will have a very long, very painful amount of time to think about what you did to my son," Alessandra whispered, turning her back on him and walking toward the private elevator. "And Gavin? The council won't be looking for you. They already approved the budget for your funeral."
The heavy steel doors of the VIP elevator opened. Alessandra stepped inside, leaving her broken, sobbing husband alone in the bright, clinical light of the garage, waiting for the men who would erase him from the face of the earth.
