Chapter 4

The opulent salon was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their ornate brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Vivienne’s champagne satin gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had completely evaporated, leaving behind a feral mask of desperation and cornered panic.
Vivienne’s eyes flicked nervously toward the small juice stain on her expensive skirt, calculating the political damage of the moment. When her gaze returned to Caleb, her defensive smile hardened into a mask of pure, feral arrogance. She believed her status as the daughter of a powerful allied family made her completely immune to the consequences of her actions.
"He’ll learn to mind my dress," Vivienne stated clearly, lifting her chin and attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic authority.
The sheer audacity of the confession, delivered in the presence of the mafia boss and his entire syndicate, was staggering. She hadn't denied striking the child; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary disciplinary measure, brushing off the physical assault of the heir as a mundane inconvenience.
"You struck my son because of a stained piece of fabric," Caleb stated with brutal, surgical precision. "You attempted to frame a defenseless woman to cover your own pathetic, vicious lack of control."
"I am trying to prepare him for the real world!" Vivienne shrieked, tears of frustration ruining her flawless makeup. "You coddle him! You let him cling to this pathetic, disheveled creature instead of respecting his future stepmother! I had to assert dominance to remind the staff of their place! The boy is a nuisance!"
Caleb did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately beside the velvet ottoman.
With profound, measured grace, Caleb gently lifted Oliver from Lena’s lap. He held his son securely against his broad chest, his massive, tattooed hands dwarfing the child's small frame. Oliver immediately wrapped his arms around his father's neck, resting his rosy cheek against the tailored dark suit.
Remaining beside Lena, Caleb turned his body slightly, a calculated, physical maneuver designed to keep Oliver entirely away from Vivienne's reach. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Vivienne's authority in a single, fluid movement.
He stood between the trembling maid and the furious fiancée, an impenetrable wall of impending violence.
"Do you believe," Caleb began, speaking so slowly that every syllable landed like a physical blow across her face, "that I require the disciplinary advice of a woman who tortures children behind my back?"
"I am your fiancée!" Vivienne cried, her ruby earrings swinging wildly as she took a step backward. "I am the daughter of the Shaw syndicate! You cannot treat me like a common criminal in front of your capos! I demand respect, Caleb!"
Caleb watched Vivienne with a cold, unwavering stare. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone.

"Respect is earned," Caleb replied, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "And you have earned nothing but my absolute disgust. You are a fatal liability to this family."
Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Vivienne’s defensive smile completely disappeared. The color drained from her fair skin as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated.
