Chapter 10

"Did you honestly believe I would allow a woman who tortures my staff and strikes my son to rule by my side, Arthur?" Caleb asked, his dark eyes burning with cold authority.
Arthur glared up at him, his weapon trembling. "You kidnapped her! You are starting a war you cannot win!"
"If I wanted a war, you would already be dead on my driveway," Caleb stated coldly. He reached into his pocket and tossed a thick, blood-stained dossier over the railing. It landed heavily at Arthur's feet. "Your daughter was siphoning funds from our joint accounts to pay off her own gambling debts. She was a liability. You can have her back, Arthur. But the alliance is dead, and the eastern ports belong to me as compensation."
Arthur stared at the dossier, the color draining from his face as he realized his daughter had lied to him to provoke a war to cover her own monstrous crimes. He slowly lowered his weapon, signaling his surviving men to stand down.
"Bring her out," Arthur gritted his teeth, his pride entirely shattered.
An hour later, the estate was quiet. The Shaw forces had retreated with the disgraced Vivienne, leaving the Whitlock syndicate battered but victorious. The acrid smell of gunpowder had begun to dissipate, replaced once again by the scent of the evergreen garlands.
Caleb walked slowly back up to the master suite. His suit was ruined, his knuckles bruised, but he was alive, and his home was secure. He pressed his hand to the biometric scanner, and the heavy steel door clicked open.
Lena and Oliver were asleep on the massive bed, wrapped tightly in each other's arms. The boy was clutching his small teddy bear, completely safe under the warm, heavy duvet. When the door opened, Lena gasped and sat up, her eyes wide. Seeing Caleb standing there, alive and victorious, she let out a ragged sob and flew across the room, throwing her arms around his neck.
Caleb caught her, holding her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair. He inhaled the sweet scent of her, letting it wash away the darkness of the evening.
"You came back," Lena whispered, tears of profound relief soaking into his ruined white shirt.
"I told you I would," Caleb replied, his voice a low, fierce rumble. "The war is over. She is gone, and her family will never step foot on our territory again."
Lena pulled back slightly, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. The exhaustion in her delicate features had melted away, replaced by a radiant, quiet strength. "What happens now, Caleb?"
May you like
"Now," Caleb said softly, reaching out to gently cup her face with his tattooed hands, "we build a life together. You are the heart of this house, Lena. You are the mother Oliver needs, and you are the only woman I will ever want."
He leaned forward, closing the distance between them entirely, and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her lips. The political fallout of the night's violence would undoubtedly require his ruthless attention in the coming days, and the commission would demand answers for the broken alliance. But as Caleb held the brave, beautiful woman in his arms in the quiet warmth of his master suite, he knew his empire was finally whole. The true battle for his family had only just begun, and he was ready for it.
