Chapter 7

The sheer, brazen audacity of the statement echoed off the gilded mirrors. It was a callous admission of absolute cruelty, an arrogant attempt to gaslight the room into believing her actions were simply the harsh, necessary realities of maintaining the syndicate's financial hierarchy.
Damon’s reaction was deliberate, fueled by a cold, terrifying, protective adrenaline. He did not yell. He did not reach for a weapon. His restraint was a masterclass in terror.
He moved with absolute, predatory precision. He stepped decisively forward, keeping Megan entirely away from the searing heat of the hearth. He inserted his broad-shouldered, masculine frame directly into the medium wide space between Vanessa and the trembling housemaid, creating an impenetrable physical shield of authority.
Without breaking eye contact with his fiancée, Damon reached into the interior breast pocket of his tailored dark suit jacket. His movements were slow and deliberate.
He withdrew a thick, closed leather wallet.
Damon extended his arm backward. He placed the heavy leather wallet directly into Megan’s free, trembling hand.
The physical gesture was a public declaration. It was an absolute, undeniable claim of protection over the maid, a silent command that her daughter's life would be saved by the very syndicate that Vanessa had attempted to weaponize against her.
Three-year-old Mila, sensing the shift in the power dynamic, hurried over from the velvet sofa. The toddler stayed close beside Megan, wrapping her small arms tightly around the maid's black dress.
Feeling the solid, unyielding weight of the wallet in her hand, and the warm presence of the child beside her, the paralyzing terror that had gripped Megan finally broke. Her rigid, tense shoulders eased slightly. The crushing despair lifted, replaced by a desperate, frantic surge of hope.
Damon remained standing perfectly still. He kept his calm, unwavering gaze settled entirely on Vanessa. He watched her in absolute silence as the envelope burned completely to ash behind the fireplace grate.
"You burned a child's life in my fireplace," Damon stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal glasses on the nearby tables.

"I eliminated a parasite!" Vanessa snapped back, her voice losing its practiced elegance, pitching higher with defensive panic. "The Cross family and the Sterling family are merging! You were distracted by the staff, Damon! I did what was necessary to remind everyone who will be the queen of this estate!"
"Does a queen command respect by burning the hopes of a mother?" Damon inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
