Chapter 5

The cruel, casual dismissal hung in the bright, golden air. Megan’s hands were inches from the searing heat of the grate, the flames illuminating the sheer, paralyzing terror in her expressive eyes.

From the safety of the burgundy velvet sofa, little Mila watched the horrific display. Her innocent mind processed the red ribbon, the fire, and the agonizing scream of the woman she adored.

Mila pointed a tiny finger toward the hearth, her voice ringing out with a worried, desperate urgency.

"Mommy money!" Mila cried softly, her words punctuated with little, breathless toddler pauses. "Auntie burn!"

The childish, clear American accent sliced through the sophisticated chatter of the salon with the devastating force of a detonating bomb.

Simultaneously, the heavy, measured footsteps of Damon Sterling echoed behind them. The mafia boss had been walking toward the fireplace to retrieve his daughter, stepping perfectly into the medium wide space just as the toddler spoke those devastating words.

Damon stopped moving entirely. His broad shoulders went rigid beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He looked at his toddler daughter, processing the worried, innocent exclamation. Then, his dark, observant eyes shifted to the fireplace.

He saw the envelope blazing on the logs. He saw Vanessa's cold, triumphant posture.

And then he saw Megan, her rumpled apron brushing the floor, her bare hands reaching desperately toward the open flames, entirely willing to burn herself alive.

The realization of the absolute, humiliating violence that had occurred in his home cemented itself in his calculating mind.

Damon moved with absolute, predatory grace. He closed the distance across the marble floor in two long, fluid strides. He stepped directly beside Megan.

Before her fingers could breach the iron grate and touch the flames, Damon reached out. With his artistically tattooed hand, the heavy signet ring gleaming under the chandelier light, he gently caught Megan’s forearm, pulling her firmly and safely back from the fire.

The physical intervention was profound. The effect on the room was instantaneous and absolute.

The sheer, commanding presence of the mafia boss stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas reception in a heartbeat. Every single guest in the grand salon stopped eating and speaking. Champagne flutes were lowered slowly back to silver trays. The polite, affluent conversation died entirely in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified vacuum. Fifty faces turned toward the fireplace, their fair skin paling as they watched Damon Sterling.

Damon did not yell. He did not explode. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous than any outburst of rage.

He did not look at his fiancée. He looked directly at Megan.

"Megan," Damon said, his deep, quiet voice echoing loudly in the dead-silent room.

He paused after her name, a measured, agonizing silence that hung in the bright air like an executioner's blade. He kept his cold, unwavering gaze locked entirely on the broken, exhausted housemaid.

"What was that?" Damon asked.
