Chapter 1

Tiered crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceiling of the Whitmore estate, flooding the entire interior with a warm, golden light that banished the bitter December frost. Ivory candles glowed softly inside tall glass hurricane holders, lined meticulously along polished walnut consoles. The amber illumination reflected endlessly across gilded mirrors, highlighting pristine marble floors and deep burgundy velvet sofas. It was a flawless display of power and wealth, a crowded Christmas reception designed to mask the lethal reality of the men who occupied the room.
At the center of the grand salon stood Gareth Whitmore. At thirty-three, the mafia boss was a striking, imposing figure. He possessed broad shoulders that effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit, his angular jaw shadowed by extremely short, precise stubble. His naturally swept-back, slightly wavy hair caught the golden light as he surveyed his domain. Artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers with visible negative space, contrasting sharply with the heavy family signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that gleamed on his wrist. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The southern ports are entirely locked down for the holiday, Gareth," muttered Silas, his most trusted capo, stepping close to be heard over the elegant string quartet.
"Are you certain of that, Silas?" Gareth asked, his deep, controlled voice carrying a crisp American accent. "The holidays make our rivals desperate. Desperate men make unforgivable mistakes."
"My men are stationed at every dock, Boss," Silas assured him, taking a slow sip from a crystal flute. "Everything is running exactly to your specifications."
"Keep the perimeter guards doubled until sunrise," Gareth commanded, his dark eyes sweeping over the formally dressed guests mingling beside the evergreen garlands. "I want absolutely no surprises in my home tonight."
"Of course," Silas nodded. "And how is the bride-to-be handling the pressures of the syndicate?"
Gareth’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He looked across the room at Sienna Vale, his fiancée. She was twenty-nine, draped in a stunning champagne satin gown that contrasted beautifully with her fair, rosy skin. Heavy ruby earrings sparkled as she laughed gracefully at a guest’s joke, maintaining a concerned, polished public expression. The engagement was a cold, strategic alliance designed to consolidate power with the Vale family.
"Sienna understands the expectations of this family," Gareth replied, his tone entirely devoid of warmth. "She knows her role."

"She plays the part perfectly," Silas noted, swirling his drink. "But watch your back, Gareth. A woman who marries for a crown rarely settles for just wearing it."
"Let her scheme," Gareth said smoothly. "I control the board, Silas. Nobody makes a move in this house without my permission. Now, check on the security detail at the front gates."
