Chapter 4

The opulent grand foyer was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their glass hurricane holders seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Bianca’s burgundy velvet gown. The polished public smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had completely evaporated, leaving behind the faint, terrifying cracks of feral, calculating malice.

"Have you lost your mind, Bianca?" an older capo hissed loudly from a nearby velvet sofa, half-standing as the leash dropped. "That animal is a trained killer! There are children in this room! We cannot afford a bloodbath during a holiday reception!"

"Sit down, Marcus," Bianca snapped, her American accent turning shrill and chaotic. "I am in control of this estate. I am teaching this insolent servant a permanent lesson. The beast will do exactly as I command. He knows who his masters are! She needs to learn her place in this hierarchy!"

"You are going to trigger a massacre!" another guest shouted in a panicked whisper. "Someone grab the leash! Don't let it near the boy! The dog is starving!"

The heavy leather leash hit the polished marble floor. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed, completely horrified by the fiancée's decision to unleash a starved, trained attack dog in the middle of a crowded reception.

Mara held completely still, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the dark, amber eyes of the massive Rottweiler standing a few feet away.

Atlas did not lunge. He did not bare his teeth.

The four-year-old guard dog calmly stepped forward, his heavy paws making almost no sound on the marble floor. He closed the distance between them with a steady, relaxed gait. Atlas stopped directly in front of the trembling maid.

Then, in a gesture that completely defied his terrifying reputation, the massive Rottweiler lifted his heavy right paw and offered it to Mara.

Mara’s breath hitched in her throat. Her delicate features, pale with shock, softened instantly. She slowly reached out with her trembling hand, carefully avoiding sudden movements. She briefly accepted the heavy paw, her fingers resting against his dark fur.

Atlas lowered his paw. He turned slightly and sat down directly against Mara’s shin, leaning his massive weight against her legs in a clear, undeniable display of absolute trust and protection.

Before anyone in the stunned room could process the miraculous interaction, a small, cheerful voice broke through the unbearable tension.

Teddy stepped out from behind Mara’s rumpled white apron. The little boy looked up at Bianca, his young mind connecting the peaceful interaction to the bizarre threats he had witnessed earlier in the day. His round, rosy cheeks flushed with a wave of delighted relief.

Teddy pointed a tiny finger directly toward the massive guard dog, and then looked up at Bianca with absolute, innocent certainty.

"Auntie, Atlas won’t bite Mommy!" Teddy announced clearly, his young American accent ringing across the polished marble floor. "He loves her! He is a good boy! You said he was bad, but he is good!"

The devastating impact of the child's truth struck the immediate area like a physical blow. The absolute stillness of Ethan Vale sent an immediate, chilling ripple through the grand foyer.

Ethan, who had been observing the horrifying scene, instantly paused at the unexpected affection displayed by his notoriously aggressive dog. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second. He moved with preternatural speed, his artistic negative-space tattoos blurring as he stepped fully into the light.

"Do not move a single muscle," Ethan commanded the surrounding guards, his deep voice slicing through the panicked murmurs. "Keep your weapons holstered. If anyone draws a gun, I will shoot them myself."

"Boss, the animal is volatile," Marcus warned nervously. "He hasn't eaten properly in days."

"I said stand down, Marcus," Ethan replied coldly.

The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading down the long foyer until it consumed the entire grand space. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city turned their heads, all staring toward the Christmas tree.

Ethan’s dark, sweeping gaze moved slowly from the massive Rottweiler sitting peacefully against the maid's leg, directly to Mara.

He studied Mara’s gentle hand, which had moved to rest comfortingly on Atlas’s broad head. His sharp, angular jaw tightened, the muscles ticking beneath his extremely short stubble.

"Mara," Ethan said, speaking quietly. His deep, measured voice carried a lethal, apocalyptic authority that shook the very foundation of the room. He allowed a terrifying pause to stretch out before finishing his question. "Atlas trusts you?"
