Chapter 5

The silence stretching across the grand salon was absolute and apocalyptic. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed on the burgundy velvet sofas, the festive Christmas reception completely obliterated by the exposure of such calculated, psychopathic cruelty.
Nathaniel Crowne did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately between Camille and Elena.
It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Camille's authority in a single, fluid movement. He remained beside Elena, his towering frame offering an impenetrable wall against the furious fiancée.
Moving with profound, measured grace, Nathaniel removed the loosened sash from Elena's waist entirely. He placed the decorative sash on the polished walnut console, the heavy velvet sliding against the wood with a quiet hiss.
Elena’s tense, rigid shoulders slowly eased. The paralyzing terror that had gripped her for months finally began to recede. She was standing behind the apex predator, her child safely protected by the very man she had been taught to fear.
Maisie, entirely unaware of the catastrophic betrayal she had just exposed, stepped closer to the maid. The little girl in the cream reindeer sweater reached out and took Elena’s free hand in her tiny grip. With absolute, innocent adoration, Maisie leaned against the soft fabric of Elena's black maternity dress, seeking comfort in the woman who loved her.
Nathaniel stood between Camille and Elena. He fixed Camille with a cold, unwavering stare. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone, his eyes promising absolute ruin.
"You attempted to manipulate the bloodline of this syndicate through petty, sadistic psychological torture against my staff," Nathaniel stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of impending doom that echoed off the gilded mirrors. "You threatened the mother of my child and terrified my daughter. You are a fatal liability to my family, and I will not tolerate a liability in my home."
Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Camille’s defensive arrogance completely disappeared. The color drained from her fair, rosy face as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated. She backed away until her spine hit the edge of a carved walnut console, realizing with a sinking horror that the political immunity she had relied upon was entirely useless inside the walls of the Crowne estate.
"This reception is concluded," Nathaniel announced, shifting his dark gaze to the fifty elite guests seated around the room. His deep voice boomed with absolute, terrifying authority. "Everyone who does not carry the Crowne name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this salon immediately. The holiday celebration is over."
Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women paled in terror as they abandoned their champagne glasses and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia civil war.

"Nathaniel, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Camille hissed, attempting to salvage her dignity as the room rapidly emptied. "My father will hear of this. The Voss family will not tolerate this level of public disrespect over a pregnant servant. You need our shipping routes."
"I would burn every ship in the harbor before I let you sleep under my roof again," Nathaniel replied coldly.
