Chapter 5

The silence stretching across the grand foyer was absolute and apocalyptic. The fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives remained paralyzed on the burgundy velvet benches, the festive Christmas reception completely obliterated by the exposure of such calculated, psychopathic cruelty.
Eliza, her lungs finally drawing in full breaths of air, felt her knees weaken from the adrenaline crash. She took a trembling step backward and settled onto the nearby burgundy velvet bench with the inhaler still clutched tightly in her hand. Her black maid dress was creased, but the sheer terror in her clear eyes began to slowly recede.
Adrian stood between Sabine and the bench, his towering frame offering an impenetrable wall against the furious fiancée. He looked down at his three-year-old son. Ben, entirely unaware of the catastrophic betrayal he had just exposed, waddled closer to the bench. The little boy reached out and gently took Eliza’s free hand, holding her delicate fingers in his tiny grip. He stood safely under the golden Christmas lights, sheltered by his father's imposing silhouette.
Adrian watched Sabine with a cold, unwavering stare. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone.
"You attempted to manipulate the hierarchy of this syndicate through petty, sadistic violence," Adrian stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of impending ruin. "You tortured my staff and manipulated my son's environment. You are a fatal liability."
Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Sabine’s defensive arrogance completely disappeared. The color drained from her fair, rosy face as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated. She backed away until her spine hit the edge of a carved walnut table, realizing with a sinking horror that the political immunity she had relied upon was entirely useless inside the walls of the Marlowe estate.
"This reception is concluded," Adrian announced, shifting his dark gaze to the fifty elite guests seated around the room. "Everyone who does not carry the Marlowe name, or work in my personal security detail, will vacate this foyer immediately."
Chairs scraped frantically against the polished marble floors. Men and women paled in terror as they abandoned their champagne glasses and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of violence before they were forced to take a side in a mafia civil war.
"Adrian, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Sabine hissed, attempting to salvage her dignity as the room rapidly emptied. "My father will hear of this. The Rowe family will not tolerate this level of public disrespect. You need our shipping routes."
"I would burn every ship in the harbor before I let you sleep under my roof again," Adrian replied coldly.
Within ninety seconds, the sprawling foyer was completely empty, save for Adrian, Sabine, Eliza, Ben, and the heavy security detail standing silently by the gilded mirrors. The bright, airy luminosity of the room now illuminated only the raw, ugly truth of the betrayal.
Adrian looked down at Eliza. The gentle maid was still sitting on the bench, holding his son's hand, her delicate features pale with shock.
"Eliza," Adrian said, his tone softening only marginally as he addressed her. "Take Ben upstairs to my private quarters. Lock the doors. Allow no one inside but my personal guard."
"Yes, Mr. Marlowe," Eliza whispered, her voice shaking with residual adrenaline. She gently squeezed the three-year-old boy’s hand, offering him a small, watery smile. "Come along, Ben. Let's go see if Santa left anything early."
Ben looked up at his father, then at Sabine, before clinging tightly to Eliza's rumpled white apron. As the maid and the toddler hurried up the sweeping marble staircase, their footsteps echoing softly, Adrian turned his full, terrifying attention back to the woman in the champagne gown.
"Now," Adrian said, taking a slow, predatory step toward her. "You are going to explain to me exactly how many times you have threatened her when I was not looking."
May you like
"I won't tell you anything!" Sabine shrieked, backing away until she bumped into a cream marble column. "If I confess, you will kill me! My silence is the only leverage I have left to walk out of this mansion alive!"
"Do you believe leverage exists for a woman who has just admitted to attempting murder in my home?" Adrian countered.
