Chapter 4

The opulent grand foyer was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their ornate brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Sabine’s champagne satin gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had begun to fracture, leaving behind the faint, terrifying cracks of cornered panic.
Eliza quickly brought the inhaler to her lips, pressing the canister down and inhaling deeply. The sharp hiss of the medication filled the silent room. She held her breath for a few seconds, her shoulders dropping as the life-saving medicine finally opened her burning lungs. She let out a long, shuddering exhale, her chest still heaving rapidly against her rumpled white apron.
She looked up, meeting Adrian’s intense, unwavering gaze. She was terrified of the monstrous woman standing a few feet away, but the protective, towering presence of the mafia boss gave her a sudden, desperate courage.
Tears gathered heavily along Eliza’s lower eyelids, making her highly expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, refusing to look away from the man who had just saved her life.
"Yes," Eliza answered, her voice incredibly quiet, yet carrying a devastating, undeniable truth that sliced through the silent room. "Sabine makes me earn it."
The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. Murmurs of absolute shock and outrage rippled through the syndicate members. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Marlowe syndicate had just been publicly accused of physically torturing a household servant out of sheer, petty vanity, and using a medical necessity as leverage.
"That is an outrageous lie!" Sabine shouted, stepping forward, her ruby earrings swinging wildly. The aristocratic polish was completely gone. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Adrian! I have never touched her filthy medicine! She must have dropped it herself! She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family!"
"Do you expect me to accept the premise that a three-year-old child and a maid conspired to invent such a specific, treacherous lie, Sabine?" Adrian asked, his deep voice effortlessly drowning out her frantic excuses.
"He is a toddler, Adrian!" Sabine cried, pointing a shaking finger at Ben. "Children have vivid imaginations! He found it under a cushion! You cannot take the word of a confused boy and a lying maid over your future wife!"
"Is it your custom to blame my son for the treacherous filth that you orchestrated in my own home?" Adrian asked, his tone so terrifyingly calm that several guests physically recoiled.
"I am protecting this family!" Sabine shrieked defensively, slamming her manicured hands against her champagne gown. "She is overstepping her boundaries! She is constantly coddling the boy! I had to assert dominance to remind the staff of their place!"
Sabine’s eyes briefly flicked toward the nearby velvet cushion where she had hidden the inhaler, calculating the political damage of the moment. When her gaze returned to Adrian, the last remnants of her careful, polished smile faded entirely. She lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic defiance, believing her family's power could still shield her from his wrath.
"She needed to learn respect, Adrian," Sabine stated, her voice dropping into a cold, uncompromising tone. "The staff must be managed."

"You attempted to suffocate a defenseless woman because of your own pathetic, desperate insecurities," Adrian stated with brutal, surgical precision. "You used a medical necessity as an instrument of torture. You are a monster."
Adrian moved with preternatural speed, stepping smoothly into the space to position his broad, masculine body deliberately between Sabine and Eliza. It was an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection.
