Chapter 9

Mara burst into the war room, disregarding every rule of mafia etiquette. Her black maid dress swished wildly, her white apron wrinkled, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The heavy steel door clanged loudly against the concrete wall, drawing the immediate, hostile attention of Damon and his remaining lieutenants.

"Mara, what is the meaning of this?" Damon barked, instinctively reaching for his sidearm.

"It's Julian," Mara gasped, her clear, expressive eyes wide with terror. She pointed a trembling finger toward the doorway. "And Elias. They're in the stairwell. I heard them talking. They altered the garage dispatch two years ago. They thought Miriam was going to the feds."

Damon’s entire demeanor shifted. The stoic, commanding boss vanished, replaced by a terrifying, primal predator. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"What else did they say, Mara?" Damon asked, his voice a horrifyingly calm whisper.

"They're going to pump gas into the ventilation system," she cried out. "They're going to kill you, Miriam, and Lily, and blame it on the Cross family."

Damon didn't ask questions. He didn't ask for proof. He simply looked at Silas.

"Lock down the ventilation. Now," Damon commanded.

Silas lunged for the control panel, punching in override codes. A heavy, mechanical grinding echoed through the walls as the emergency steel blast shields slammed shut over the air vents, sealing the bunker and the medical wing off from the central system.

"Victor," Damon said, turning to his financial lieutenant. "Draw your weapon. If anyone comes through that door who isn't me, kill them."

Damon drew his heavy pistol, his angular jaw locked in a grimace of pure, murderous intent. He stepped out of the war room, moving with lethal silence down the corridor. Mara stayed behind Victor, trembling as she waited in the silence.

Three minutes later, a series of muffled gunshots echoed from the upper stairwell. Two loud, distinct cracks, followed by a heavy thud.

The silence that followed was agonizing. Then, the heavy door pushed open.

Damon walked back into the room. His tailored suit was unblemished, but his eyes were dark, haunted hollows. He holstered his weapon slowly, his tattooed hands perfectly steady.

"Julian and Elias have been dealt with," Damon announced to the room, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at Mara, a profound, heavy gratitude in his gaze. "You saved my family's life tonight, Mara. Twice in one day."

"I just want them to be safe, Mr. Mercer," Mara whispered, leaning against the cold concrete wall, the adrenaline finally crashing out of her system.

"They will be," Damon promised. He turned back to the monitors, looking at the feeds of his fortified estate. The internal rot had been excised, but the war was far from over.

"Silas," Damon ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Send word to our captains. We strike the Cross syndicate tonight. Burn their warehouses, seize their ports, and slaughter anyone who holds their crest. By sunrise, I want the Cross family erased from the history of this city."

Silas nodded grimly, reaching for the secure phones. The vengeance of the Mercer family was about to be unleashed.
