Chapter 3

The silence within the grand salon was absolute, a fragile pane of glass waiting to shatter. The elite members of the criminal underworld watched in horrified fascination as the dead wife of the Mercer syndicate’s boss emerged from the walls of the Cross family mansion. The implications were catastrophic. A blood pact was forged on the belief of Miriam's tragic death; discovering she had been held prisoner by the very woman set to replace her was an act of war.

"Damon, darling, you must understand," Selena began, her voice trembling as she took a hesitant step backward. "She was unstable after the accident. The doctors said—"

"Shut your mouth," Damon commanded, his voice barely rising above a whisper, yet it struck with the force of a physical blow. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fists clenched at his sides.

"Selena, what is the meaning of this?" Arthur Cross, Selena's father and the head of the rival syndicate, pushed his way through the stunned crowd. He looked from his daughter to the ghost standing in the doorway. "Is this a joke?"

"It’s no joke, Arthur," Damon said, his dark eyes never leaving Selena's terrified face. "Your daughter faked my wife's death, locked her in a wall, and told her our child was dead. She has been torturing my family under your roof."

"Damon, I knew nothing of this," Arthur stammered, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "I swear to you on my life."

"Your life is already forfeit," Damon said coldly.

Damon reached into his tailored dark suit jacket, the movement so swift it caused several of the Cross family guards to instinctively reach for their concealed weapons. But Damon merely pulled out a sleek, black encrypted radio.

"Lock the doors," Damon spoke into the device, his voice echoing in the dead silent room. "No one leaves this estate. Disarm the Cross guards. Shoot anyone who resists."

Chaos instantly erupted. Women in expensive gowns screamed, and men shouted as Damon's loyal soldiers, positioned strategically around the reception, drew their weapons in unison. The heavy oak doors of the grand salon slammed shut, locked from the inside by Mercer enforcers.

Damon ignored the pandemonium entirely. He finally turned his back on Selena and faced his wife.

Miriam was kneeling on the polished marble floor, entirely consumed by the little girl in front of her. She was sobbing silently, pressing frantic, desperate kisses to Lily's round rosy cheeks and soft curls. Lily was giggling, wrapping her tiny arms around Miriam’s neck.

"Mommy's not a video," Lily stated happily, her little boots kicking the floor.

"No, my sweet girl," Miriam wept, burying her face in the child's cream knitted blouse. "Mommy is real. I'm right here."

Mara stood frozen by the mirror door, her black maid dress blending into the shadows. She felt entirely out of place in this violent clash of titans, but when Damon looked at her, his expression softened by a microscopic fraction.

"Mara," Damon ordered softly. "Take my wife and daughter. Move them behind me. Shield them."

"Yes, Mr. Mercer," Mara whispered instantly. She stepped forward, gently placing a protective hand on Miriam's shoulder, helping the frail woman stand while she still clutched the toddler.

"You can't just take over my house, Damon!" Selena shrieked, panic completely stripping away her aristocratic grace as Mercer guards moved to surround her and her father. "I did this for us! She was weak! She didn't belong in our world!"

"You have no idea what my world is about to become, Selena," Damon promised softly.
