Chapter 1

Tiered crystal chandeliers flooded the sprawling reception room with a warm, golden light that danced across the polished marble floors. Inside Julian Mercer’s luxurious mansion, the Christmas gala was a display of absolute power and terrifying wealth. Formally dressed guests, representing the city's most dangerous syndicates, mingled effortlessly beside heavy evergreen garlands. Ivory candles glowed inside glass hurricane holders along polished walnut consoles, and gilded mirrors reflected the amber illumination across carved mahogany furniture and burgundy velvet sofas. At the center of it all, a towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with golden fairy lights, red ribbons, and fragile glass ornaments.

Yet, amid the breathtaking opulence, Tessa Ward was drowning.

The beautiful, gentle maid stood near a walnut console, her vision swimming in and out of focus. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a starched white collar and cuffs, but her usually immaculate appearance had deteriorated. Her white apron was rumpled, her dark hair was disheveled, and the white ruffled headband sat crookedly atop her head. Tessa’s delicate features were pale, her clear, expressive eyes bloodshot and heavy. For three days and three nights, she had been denied sleep, her movements growing dangerously slow and unsteady as her body approached total collapse.

Tessa paused over a half-tied red ribbon on the garland, her fingers trembling so violently she could barely grip the silk.

"You are dawdling, Tessa. The garlands on the east wall are still uneven," a sharp, perfectly modulated voice noted.

Vivienne Shaw, Julian’s fiancée, stood a few feet away. She was a vision in an emerald velvet gown, heavy diamond earrings catching the chandelier’s light. She maintained a polished, radiant public smile for the passing guests, but her eyes were venomous. In her manicured hand, she held a small brass handbell. For three nights, Vivienne had confiscated Tessa’s bedding, ringing that very bell the moment the maid dared to sit or close her eyes, threatening instant dismissal and ruin if Tessa disobeyed.

"Please," Tessa whispered, her voice barely a dry rasp as she looked directly at her tormentor. "Just five minutes. I can't feel my hands."

Vivienne’s smile tightened, the edges of her lips curling into a mask of polite cruelty. She lifted the brass bell a little higher, keeping a pleasant expression as a rival mafia boss walked past. "Sleep after Christmas. Keep smiling."

Before Vivienne could ring the bell to force Tessa back to work, a tiny figure pushed through the crowd of towering adults. Rosie, Julian’s three-year-old daughter, waddled toward the console. The toddler possessed soft curls, round rosy cheeks, and little dimples. She wore a red velvet pinafore over a cream knitted sweater and tiny bow shoes. Clutched in her small hands was a soft, star-shaped cushion.

Rosie had seen Vivienne strip the pillows from Tessa's quarters. Now, she offered the star-shaped cushion toward the trembling maid, before looking up at Vivienne with innocent, heartbreaking concern.

"Auntie," Rosie said, her bright, toddler voice cutting through the hum of the party. "Mommy needs her pillow back!"

From the shadow of the towering Christmas tree, Julian Mercer approached. The thirty-three-year-old mafia boss was an imposing, handsome force of nature with broad shoulders and an angular jaw. His naturally swept-back, slightly wavy hair and extremely short stubble gave him a rugged, lethal edge. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, a family signet ring, and a luxury wristwatch. Intricate artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers with visible negative space, and a small neck tattoo peeked above his collar.

Julian stepped directly beside Tessa. Without a single word, he calmly reached out and took the brass handbell from Vivienne’s fingers.
