Chapter 5

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. Murmurs of absolute shock and outrage rippled through the syndicate members. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Ashford syndicate had just been publicly accused of intentionally traumatizing the boss's toddler son to assert her own control.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Camille shouted, stepping forward, her emerald gown sweeping across the marble. The aristocratic polish was completely gone. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Damon! I have never threatened him! She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family!"

"Do you expect me to accept the premise that my three-year-old son and a maid conspired to invent such a specific, treacherous lie, Camille?" Damon asked, his deep voice effortlessly drowning out her frantic excuses.

"He is a toddler, Damon!" Camille cried, pointing a shaking finger at Leo. "Children have vivid imaginations! He is confused! You cannot take the word of a confused boy and a lying maid over your future wife!"

"Is it your custom to blame my son for the treacherous, psychopathic optics that you orchestrated in my own home?" Damon asked, his tone so terrifyingly calm that several guests physically recoiled.

"I am protecting this family's image!" Camille shrieked defensively, slamming her manicured hands against her velvet gown. "She is overstepping her boundaries! She is constantly coddling the boy! I had to assert dominance to remind the staff of their place! He was ruining the schedule by refusing to let the staff carry him!"

Camille briefly glanced toward the watching guests, calculating the political damage of the moment. When her gaze returned to Damon, the last remnants of her careful, affectionate smile faded entirely into a mask of pure, controlled resentment. She lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic defiance. She believed her family's power could still shield her from his wrath.

"Someone had to keep you home," Camille stated coldly, her voice dropping into a ruthless, uncompromising tone.

She had not denied the psychological torture; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary political and personal maneuver, using the child's supposed ongoing illness to manipulate Damon's travel schedule for the syndicate.

The sheer audacity of the confession, delivered in the presence of the mafia boss and his entire syndicate, was staggering.

Damon did not yell. He did not explode into physical violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat. He moved with profound, measured grace.

Damon reached down and lifted Leo securely into his arms. The toddler immediately wrapped his small arms around his father's neck, burying his round, rosy face against the tailored dark suit. Leo settled heavily against Damon’s broad shoulder, the tension finally leaving his small body as he realized he was safe.

Damon remained standing firmly beside Elise, an impenetrable wall of impending violence.

Elise did not pull away. Fueled by a fierce, maternal instinct that defied the danger of the room, she reached out. Elise rested a gentle, reassuring hand lightly on Leo’s back, her medium-brown skin contrasting beautifully with the red velvet of his romper.

Damon fixed Camille with a cold, unwavering stare while the guests remained absolutely silent. His sharp, angular jaw was set in stone, his eyes promising absolute ruin.

"You attempted to manipulate the hierarchy of this syndicate and control my movements through the psychological torture of my own son," Damon stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of impending doom. "You are a fatal liability."
