Chapter 13

Someone entered Sofia’s room that night.

They took nothing valuable.

No jewelry.

No documents.

No child.

Thank God.

They took Evelyn’s photograph.

The one Sofia kept beside her bed.

That made it personal.

Thomas found the window unlatched from inside.

No forced entry.

Household access.

Someone still loyal to Damian.

Sofia stood in the doorway holding my hand.

“Mommy gone?”

“No.”

I crouched.

“The picture is gone.”

She looked near tears.

“Same?”

“No.”

That mattered.

A photograph is not a person.

But to a three-year-old with few memories, the distinction hurts.

I promised we would replace it.

Then Thomas found something beneath the pillow.

A folded white maid collar.

My vision narrowed.

Message.

Not to me.

To her.

You still belong where we put you.

I walked downstairs carrying it.

Every household employee had been gathered.

I hated that.

Collective suspicion damages houses too.

So I did not accuse.

I asked one question.

“Who had access?”

Three people.

Housekeeper Margaret.

Valet James.

Security officer Nolan Price.

Margaret looked furious.

James confused.

Nolan calm.

Too calm.

I looked at him.

“How long have you worked here?”

“Seven years.”

“Under who originally?”

“Your father.”

“And after?”

“You.”

Wrong.

Personnel records say one thing.

Loyalty often says another.

Thomas searched his locker.

Found nothing.

Nolan smiled.

Then Milo—no, wrong story. No bird here.

Instead Sofia solved it.

She looked at Nolan and whispered:

“He brings Grandma shoes.”

Everyone froze.

I turned.

“What?”

Sofia pointed at him.

“He brings Veronica shoes.”

Nolan’s face changed.

There.

After Veronica lost access, somebody continued moving things between her and the house.

Nolan.

Thomas stepped forward.

Nolan ran.

Bad choice.

Two guards stopped him before the hallway.

No graphic fight.

Just done.

I looked at him.

“Who ordered the photograph?”

He refused.

I held up the maid collar.

“Damian?”

Silence.

Then Nolan said:

“Your father would be ashamed.”

I almost laughed.

“My father ended the charter.”

His face changed.

He had not known.

That was important.

Damian recruited people using a lie: that he was preserving my father’s wishes.

I looked at the gathered staff.

“He lied to you too.”

Nolan’s certainty cracked.

Then he whispered:

“Damian said Sofia needed reminding.”

My chest went cold.

He had stopped trying to control me.

May you like

He was now trying to frighten my daughter directly.

That ended whatever patience remained.
