Chapter 16

Sofia’s hands healed.

The skin softened.

The cracks disappeared.

One tiny scar remained near her thumb.

I noticed it sometimes.

She noticed me noticing.

“Stop looking guilty.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Fair.

I took her hand.

“I hate that I missed it.”

She squeezed mine.

“You notice now.”

That was not absolution.

It was something better.

Present tense.

Lily changed too.

For months she called every cleaning woman “Mommy helper” because she associated uniforms with what happened.

Eventually that stopped.

One afternoon she spilled juice.

Sofia grabbed a towel.

Lily panicked.

“No sink!”

We both froze.

Then Sofia crouched.

“This is just juice.”

Lily looked worried.

“Delia?”

“Not here.”

“Marcus?”

“Not here.”

Sofia smiled.

“And Mommy is cleaning because Mommy spilled half of it too.”

Lily relaxed.

I knelt and took another towel.

“What about Daddy?”

Lily looked at me seriously.

“You made mess with shoes.”

Fair.

We cleaned together.

Tiny moment.

Huge difference.

No one being punished.

No one proving worth.

May you like

Just a family cleaning a spill.

That was what ordinary life looked like when fear finally stopped narrating it.
