Chapter 7

Marissa told me the conversation word for word.

She had been folding linens outside the dining room when my mother said:

“Daniel needs to see what happens when Clara cannot manage a Carter house.”

Victor answered:

“She’s barely standing.”

Evelyn replied:

“Exactly.”

I sat very still.

Marissa continued.

Victor asked what happened if Clara simply went to bed.

My mother said she would take Noah to the east nursery immediately.

“And then?”

Marissa’s voice broke.

“She said Clara would follow.”

Of course.

My wife would drag herself after her child.

Stand longer.

Push harder.

Collapse eventually.

Then I would return and see an exhausted woman on the floor while my mother calmly managed the baby.

A visual argument.

Clara cannot cope.

Evelyn can.

Transfer authority.

They did not need to poison her.

They did not need some elaborate medical trick.

They only needed to exploit the fact that she had undergone emergency childbirth six days earlier.

Her body would do the rest.

That somehow felt colder.

“What did you do?” I asked.

Marissa swallowed.

“I brought Clara food.”

My chest tightened.

“Was she not eating?”

“Mrs. Carter said staff weren’t to bring meals upstairs.”

“Why?”

“She said if Clara was hungry, she could come to the table like everyone else.”

Six days postpartum.

No food unless she walked downstairs.

No baby unless she completed service.

No phone.

No sleep.

Every basic need turned into obedience.

Marissa continued.

“I tried to call you.”

“What happened?”

“Victor caught me.”

There.

“He took my phone. Then Mrs. Carter told me I was upsetting Clara and locked me in the service corridor.”

“How long?”

“Almost three hours.”

My hands tightened.

Then she added:

“Clara knew.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“She saw them lock me out.”

Marissa started crying.

“She apologized to me.”

That destroyed something inside me.

My wife was being abused in my house and still worried the housekeeper suffered because she tried to help.

I stood.

Marissa flinched.

I softened my voice.

“Not at you.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Boss, Clara kept saying you would come home.”

My throat tightened.

“She kept saying Daniel will understand.”

I looked toward the nursery.

My wife had trusted me while my own family used my absence against her.

May you like

That trust did not make me feel powerful.

It made me ashamed I had given Evelyn and Victor enough unchecked authority for any of this to happen.
