Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Ashford estate was a breathtaking masterpiece of wealth and power, illuminated by the warm, flickering glow of tall, ornate candle stands. It was the night of the annual family gala, an event where the city’s elite and the most powerful figures of the underworld gathered under one roof. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, cigar smoke, and the subtle, metallic tang of unsaid threats. The room was surrounded by a long, gleaming silver banquet console laden with exquisite delicacies and a shallow, decorative indoor fountain that provided a gentle, ambient soundtrack to the polite, guarded conversations. Capos, distinguished guests, and heavily armed bodyguards in sharp suits filled the space, their eyes constantly moving, observing the intricate dance of power unfolding before them.
At the center of it all stood Imani, the undisputed head of the syndicate. At twenty-eight, she was a vision of absolute power and breathtaking beauty. Her rich, glowing dark brown skin was flawless, and her voluminous locs were elegantly pinned up for the gala, a crown fit for a queen. She wore a striking crimson velvet evening gown with a sweetheart neckline that contrasted fiercely with the opulent surroundings. Diamond chandelier earrings brushed against her shoulders, and a heavy family signet ring, a symbol of her lethal authority, adorned her hand alongside a luxury wristwatch. Her black stilettos clicked softly against the marble floor as she commanded the room.
Beside her, holding a champagne flute with a trembling hand, was her sixty-four-year-old mother, Gloria. Gloria was the complete opposite of the ruthless world her daughter commanded. She featured warm mahogany skin and a beautifully shaped silver-streaked natural afro. Dressed in a tasteful plum silk floor-length dress and wrapped in a beaded pashmina shawl, she looked like a woman who belonged in a quiet garden, not a Mafia gala. Her gold hoop earrings caught the candlelight, and her comfortable embellished flats spoke of her gentle nature.
As the evening wore on, the strain of the event began to show on Gloria. She offered a warm, tired smile to her daughter and turned toward an empty, velvet-cushioned chair positioned near the shallow decorative fountain.
"I just need to rest my feet for a moment, sweetheart," Gloria murmured softly, beginning to slowly lower herself toward the seat.
Imani nodded, a rare, genuine smile softening her fierce features. "Of course, Mama. I'll have someone bring you some water."
But before Gloria could even touch the cushion, Preston stepped into the space. Preston, thirty-nine, was Imani’s husband—a White American man who had married into the syndicate seeking power and influence. He wore a custom-tailored midnight blue tuxedo with sharp black lapels, a luxury chronograph watch, and gleaming patent leather dress shoes. His fair skin was flushed with too much expensive scotch, and his eyes burned with deep-seated resentment toward the woman who outranked him and the mother she adored.
With a sudden, vicious motion, Preston swung his leg out. The heavy toe of his patent leather dress shoe connected solidly with the back of Gloria’s knee.
"Ah!" Gloria cried out as her leg gave way completely.
She lost her balance and crashed hard onto the cold, unforgiving marble floor. Her beaded pashmina shawl slipped from her shoulders, and her champagne glass shattered, scattering crystal shards across the tiles. Several nearby guests gasped, physically recoiling in absolute shock at the blatant, unprovoked assault.

Before anyone could move to help the elderly woman, Preston stepped forward. Looking down at Gloria with pure, unadulterated contempt, he forcefully shoved her shoulder with the side of his shoe, pushing her further into the spilled champagne.
"Trash belongs on the floor," Preston sneered, his voice loud enough to silence the surrounding conversations.
