Chapter 6

The bright, airy sunroom, previously a vibrant celebration of childhood, now resembled a battlefield of shattered cardboard, broken glass, and scattered dinosaur toys. The soft, elegant warmth of the cinematic lighting provided no comfort to the two bleeding figures on the floor.
Claire remained kneeling near the doorway, holding little Ethan tightly against her chest. The three-year-old had stopped crying, his face buried in his mother’s neck, shielded from the violence by the crisp white tablecloth. Claire’s fair, rosy face was a mask of cold realization. She looked at her unconscious husband in the splintered crates, and then at her mother-in-law beneath the photo wall. The love she had once held for Michael evaporated entirely, replaced by the hardened, unforgiving blood of her father’s lineage.
Robert Parker calmly smoothed the front of his blazer. He stepped over a scattered foam rock and handed the forged DNA envelope to Vincent.
"The paperwork, Don Vincent," Robert said quietly.
Vincent took the envelope. He didn't look at the papers inside. He slowly, deliberately crushed the manila envelope in his large fist.
He walked forward, his polished shoes crunching over the broken glass of the picture frames, and stopped directly over Patricia.
Patricia looked up through her tangled hair. Her face was already swelling, a dark, bruised handprint blossoming across her pale skin. She trembled violently, her eyes darting between Vincent’s polished shoes and his cold, sharp, intimidating face.
"You faked the DNA test results," Vincent said. His voice was dead calm. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between his words, keeping his volume low. Every sentence sounded measured, cold, and profoundly dangerous. "You wanted me to abandon the true heir?"
Patricia’s face became completely, utterly frightened. The arrogant, smirking woman who had poured garbage on a child was gone, replaced by a shivering, pathetic coward.
"Vincent... please," Patricia wheezed, clutching her bruised ribs. "It wasn't my idea! It was Michael's! The Reynolds family business is bankrupt! The banks are foreclosing on everything! Michael knew that if Ethan was the sole heir to the Caradonna trust, he would never have access to the capital!"
"So you intended to delegitimize my grandson," Vincent murmured softly. "To sever my daughter from her child, so Michael could control her share of the syndicate?"
"We just wanted a loan!" Patricia sobbed, spitting a drop of blood onto the floor. "But you refused! You said our investments were foolish! Michael said if we convinced you Claire was unfaithful, you would annul the marriage and pay him a massive settlement to go away quietly! It was just about the money, Vincent! I swear to God!"
Vincent stared down at her, his expression unmoving. "You put my grandson's hands in rotting garbage. You called my bloodline trash."

"I was angry!" Patricia wailed. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
"Apologies," Vincent whispered, "are for accidents."
