Chapter 4

The bright, natural light of the room seemed to shatter as violence erupted.

Michael’s fist swung through the air, aimed directly at Vincent’s jaw with all the desperate, adrenaline-fueled power of a cornered animal. But Vincent Caradonna was not an ordinary man. He was a veteran of decades of syndicate warfare, a man who had survived assassins and betrayals before Michael was even born.

Vincent took one single, meticulously controlled step backward.

His polished leather shoe planted firmly on the hardwood. His upper body swayed just inches out of the trajectory of the strike. Michael’s first punch grazed nothing but empty air.

Off-balance, Michael let out a guttural yell and swung a wild, looping second punch.

Vincent slipped the second punch with the effortless, terrifying grace of a predator. He dipped his shoulder, pivoting his weight into his hips, and loaded his right arm. With devastating, mechanical precision, Vincent drove one explosive counterpunch straight across Michael’s face.

The sound of knuckles connecting with bone cracked like a gunshot through the airy room.

Michael’s eyes rolled back instantly. The sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted him off his feet. He spun violently backward, completely out of control, flying directly toward the massive, brightly colored cardboard volcano display.

He crashed into the structure with a deafening impact. The lightweight volcano collapsed inward, tearing into jagged pieces of painted cardboard. Heavy foam rocks scattered violently across the polished floor, bouncing against the baseboards. Large, brightly painted toy dinosaurs flew from their display platforms like shrapnel, clattering against the glass windows. Tall, artificial jungle plants toppled over, raining plastic leaves over the wrapped birthday gifts.

Michael’s momentum carried him straight through the volcano and into the stacked, lightweight wooden display crates behind it. The wood splintered and shattered. Michael crashed through the debris, finally coming to a halt in a broken, bleeding heap on the floor, surrounded by the festive wreckage of his son's birthday party.

He groaned once, a wet, sickening sound, before falling completely unconscious.

No one spoke. The Caradonna bodyguards, who had rushed into the room at the first sign of movement, stopped dead in their tracks. They didn't need to intervene. The Don had neutralized the threat in less than three seconds.

Vincent stood perfectly still in the center of the room. The rotting garbage clung to the expensive fabric of his tailored vest, but he did not look down. His chest rose and fell in slow, rhythmic breaths. His intimidating, cold eyes shifted from the broken body of his son-in-law to the paralyzed, terrified figure of Patricia Reynolds.
