Chapter 1

The private concert hall in Chicago was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance. Bright, luminous light spilled from tiered crystal chandeliers, casting a soft, elegant warmth over the polished marble foyer. There were no heavy shadows, no muddy tints—only the crisp, fresh vibrancy of a high-society charity event. The air hummed with the polite chatter of wealthy patrons, the rustle of expensive silk, and the distant, melodic tuning of a grand piano.

In the center of the grand foyer, three-year-old Nico Greco sat quietly in his customized, child-sized wheelchair. Dressed in a flawless miniature suit that matched his father's impeccable style, his fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with innocent, nervous excitement. His small hands tightly gripped a handmade wooden airplane, clumsily wrapped in silver paper and tied with a blue ribbon.

"Auntie Bianca," Nico called out, his voice sweet and hopeful, trying to be heard over the string quartet practicing in the next room.

Bianca Greco, striking and formidable at forty-two, paused in her tracks. Her luxurious emerald formal dress swept across the marble, heavy diamond jewelry glittering against her pale, rosy skin. She looked down at her disabled nephew, her expression tightening with immediate, unmistakable disdain.

Nico proudly offered the wrapped gift, his hands trembling slightly. "I made this for you and Uncle Owen. For the charity party."

Bianca snatched the package from his small hands. With a sharp, violent tear, she ripped the silver paper away. Her manicured fingers turned the rough-hewn wooden toy over once, her eyes narrowing as if holding something diseased, before her painted lips curled into a vicious snarl. She dropped the airplane directly onto the hard marble floor.

Crack.

She lifted her designer heel and drove it down with punishing force, crushing one of the wooden wings into jagged splinters.

"Even trash looks better," Bianca laughed cruelly, the sound slicing through the bright, airy room like a serrated blade.

"No!" Nico cried out, his eyes welling with tears. He bent dangerously far over the armrest of his wheelchair, his little fingers reaching desperately toward the broken pieces of his hard work.

Before he could touch the wood, Bianca grabbed him roughly beneath his small arms. With a sharp, vicious yank, she pulled the three-year-old completely out of his seat. Nico let out a startled gasp as she dropped him onto the thick, patterned foyer carpet.

"Leave it," she hissed, her American accent dripping with aristocratic venom. "You shouldn't be in the way."

From behind her, Owen Greco stepped forward. His expensive tailored suit pulled tight across his chest as he grabbed the rubber handles of the empty wheelchair. With an arrogant, dismissive shove, he rolled the chair several feet away, leaving the young, helpless boy stranded and humiliated on the floor.

"Dad!" Nico cried, tears spilling hot and fast down his rosy cheeks. "Dad… I made it myself. I just wanted to give it to them."

The surrounding guests hesitated, turning their heads away to avoid the uncomfortable scene. But from the adjoining donor lounge, stepping through the grand, sunlit archway, Vittorio Greco saw everything. His cold, intimidating eyes locked onto his sister. The warm, luminous air in the hall instantly turned to absolute ice.
