Chapter 13

Beatrice finally lost control when the guests began leaving.

Not screaming.

Not arguing.

Leaving.

Vance capos who had spent years shaking Richard’s hand simply walked past him. Wedding guests removed themselves from the ballroom one cluster at a time. Staff who normally waited for Beatrice’s permission began taking orders from Renata instead.

Power was leaving her without noise.

She hated that.

“You ungrateful little parasite.”

Mariana stopped.

I turned.

Beatrice was looking directly at her.

“We took you in when nobody wanted you.”

Richard whispered, “Enough.”

Beatrice ignored him.

“You ate my food. Wore clothes I paid for. Slept under my roof.”

Mariana’s face tightened.

Beatrice continued.

“And now you stand beside a Mafia boss because a necklace tells him to pity you?”

I crossed the room.

Mariana lifted one hand.

I stopped.

She wanted this answer herself.

Good.

“My mother wanted me.”

Beatrice laughed.

“She left.”

“You kept her away.”

“She was weak.”

“She escaped you.”

That landed.

Beatrice’s face twisted.

Mariana continued.

“Alexander wanted his sister.”

Silence.

“You kept her letters.”

Richard lowered his head.

“You didn’t rescue me.”

Mariana’s voice shook, but she did not stop.

“You kept me close because if anyone ever found me, you needed to control the story first.”

Beatrice stared.

There.

Mariana had understood the final mechanism.

The Sterlings could always claim they had protected Camille’s daughter. Raised her. Fed her. Given her shelter.

As long as Mariana stayed obedient, their betrayal could be renamed generosity.

That was why they never sent her away.

She was both evidence and shield.

Richard finally admitted it.

“We thought if Alexander ever discovered you, we could explain.”

Mariana looked at him.

“Explain what?”

“That we kept you safe.”

“You made me serve champagne at your son’s wedding.”

Richard had no answer.

Beatrice did.

“You were useful.”

The word landed like poison.

Sebastian looked at his mother.

Then at Mariana.

For the first time, I saw shame arrive fully.

Not fear of losing Renata.

Shame.

He removed his cufflinks.

“My mother told me if the Vances ever found out, we would lose everything.”

Mariana looked at him.

“So you helped make sure I stayed nothing.”

Sebastian swallowed.

“Yes.”

Honest.

Late.

But honest.

Renata took one step farther away from him.

No reconciliation.

No dramatic forgiveness.

May you like

Just distance.

Sometimes distance is the first honest consequence betrayal earns.
