Chapter 8

The missing chair had been moved to the basement.

Not broken.

Stored.

That mattered.

Agatha wanted the absence visible.

Maren told me what happened.

“She said the table represented blood.”

I stared.

“You’re carrying my child.”

“I said that.”

“What did she say?”

Maren’s mouth tightened.

“She said pregnancy doesn’t make someone born Vassallo.”

I almost laughed.

The woman obsessed with blood had decided the mother creating the next generation did not qualify for a chair.

“What did you do?”

“I sat beside Sienna at the smaller table.”

There was a children’s table at family dinners.

My pregnant wife had been seated there.

“And when I was home?”

“They brought the chair back.”

My breathing slowed.

That was the detail.

The choreography.

Nothing permanent enough for me to notice.

Agatha knew my schedule.

Chair removed before I left the council wing.

Returned before I entered dinner.

Maren fed after family when I traveled.

Served normally when I stayed.

Storage room only on nights I slept downtown.

The cruelty had been designed around my absence.

Not random.

Operational.

I looked at my security logs.

Agatha had requested copies of my weekly schedule three months ago.

Reason:

HOUSEHOLD PLANNING.

I stared at the form.

Maren saw it too.

“She planned everything.”

“Yes.”

Agatha did not lose her temper.

That would almost have been easier to understand.

She created a system.

I looked at my wife.

“This was never about dishes.”

“No.”

“What was it about?”

Maren thought.

Then said:

“Making sure I knew she could reach me whenever you couldn’t.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what power meant to Agatha.

May you like

Not being strongest in the room.

Being the person everyone still feared when you were not in it.
