Chapter 1

“You said ‘good’ when she threatened our daughter. Say it again.”
I stood between Lucy and both of them.
The clippers were silent in my hand now, but the room still seemed to hear them.
Andrew had gone pale.
Elaine stood several feet away touching the strip I had taken from the side of her hair, staring at me with a kind of disbelief usually reserved for people who have spent years assuming consequences belong to everyone else.
Lucy pressed herself against the back of my gown.
Andrew finally found his voice.
“Maya, that was unnecessary.”
I looked at him.
“Which part?”
He hesitated.
Wrong answer.
“The clippers?”
No response.
“Or asking you to repeat what you said when your mother shaved our daughter?”
Elaine snapped, “Stop dramatizing this.”
Dr. Hannah Cole did not move from beside the exam counter.
That mattered.
She had seen enough families in that room to know when silence was more useful than interruption.
I turned toward Andrew.
“Did you say ‘good’?”
His jaw tightened.
Lucy’s fingers curled into my dress.
Then he said it.
“Yes.”
The room changed.
Not because I had doubted Lucy.
Because hearing him admit it removed the last place he could hide.
“Why?”
“She needed discipline.”
“She took too long brushing her hair.”
“That’s not all.”
There.
I saw Elaine look at him sharply.
I noticed.
“What else?”
Andrew looked away.
Lucy whispered behind me:
“Dad said I embarrass Grandma.”
My eyes returned to him.
“How?”
No answer.
Elaine answered instead.
“She refuses to behave properly when family is watching.”
Family.
Not school.
Not home.
Family.

I knew then this was not only about hair.
Someone had been training my daughter for an audience.
