Chapter 11

Evan finally asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Would you ever have told me?”

We were alone except for the twins.

No guards.

That mattered.

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“When?”

I had no good answer.

He laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

I hated when people were right before I was ready.

“I wanted to tell you after the twins were born.”

“Why then?”

“Because hiding became impossible.”

His face changed.

“That’s not telling me because you trust me.”

No.

It was telling him because logistics defeated secrecy.

Painful distinction.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked toward Miles.

Then Ivy.

“My mother tried to take our son because she thought you were powerless.”

“Yes.”

“Your uncle helped because he thought I was irrelevant.”

“Yes.”

“And both of them were able to think that because you built a marriage where neither side knew the full structure.”

That landed.

I wanted to defend myself.

Did not.

He continued.

“If I had known who Sebastian was to you, I would have questioned him talking to Mom.”

True.

“If Mom had known you had men outside this room, maybe she wouldn’t have tried.”

I shook my head.

“That cannot be the lesson.”

He frowned.

“She needed to fear me to respect no?”

Silence.

Good.

“No.”

I continued.

“If the only reason she respects my motherhood is the ring, nothing changed.”

Evan sat.

That was the deeper problem.

Power saved me in the room.

It could not become the moral argument.

The adoption plan was wrong when I was a cleaner.

Wrong when I was broke.

Wrong if Nolan never recognized me.

Wrong if no Vale guard ever came.

Evan looked at me.

“You really were a cleaner.”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

“Still weird.”

“Your mother thought I was bad at it.”

“She complained about your ironing.”

I laughed despite the incision pain.

Terrible idea.

Worth it.

Then he became serious.

“I don’t know what happens to us.”

My chest tightened.

Fair.

“Neither do I.”

That hurt.

Good.

No dramatic promise.

No instant repair.

He touched one finger to Miles’s blanket.

“Can I hold him?”

I looked at him.

He asked.

May you like

That mattered.

“Yes.”
