Chapter 10

Daniel Price came back to the estate that evening.

Victor had removed him for interfering.

I restored his access before he entered the room.

He looked uncomfortable with the gesture.

“Don’t thank me,” I said. “Tell me what happened.”

He did.

Two weeks earlier, he saw Victor make Ellie crawl across gravel beside the garden wall.

My stomach turned.

Mild bruises.

I had seen them.

Asked.

Ellie said she tripped.

Daniel intervened.

Victor told him family discipline was none of a guard’s business.

Daniel disagreed.

Then Marcus arrived.

I looked at Marcus.

He lowered his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“Marcus told me to stand down.”

I stared.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“I did.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You told me Valentina knew.”

The room went still.

I turned.

Marcus’s face went pale.

There it was.

Worse than omission.

He had used my name.

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“To end it quickly.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You used my authority to make another adult stop protecting my child.”

He looked sick.

“Yes.”

That landed differently than the recordings.

Because now I understood how Victor’s system worked around Ellie.

He hurt her.

Marcus legitimized it.

The family laughed.

Guards withdrew.

Everyone around the child received a role in maintaining the lie.

No wonder she believed telling me would fail.

The whole house behaved as if I already knew.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did Ellie hear Marcus say that?”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

My daughter thought I approved.

Weeks of pain while believing her own mother had authorized it.

I looked at Marcus.

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

“Not to me.”

He understood.

Later, he knelt in front of Ellie.

Not theatrically.

Not begging.

He said one thing.

“I lied when I said your mom knew.”

Ellie stared.

Marcus continued.

“She didn’t.”

My daughter looked at me.

I nodded.

Her entire face changed.

May you like

And for the first time, I realized the deepest wound Victor created was not fear of him.

It was doubt in me.
