Chapter 9

The quiet intimacy of the hospital room was interrupted by the sharp, vibrating buzz of Arthur’s smartphone resting on the bedside table. He glanced at the caller ID. It was his Uncle Richard.
Arthur sighed, his broad shoulders slumping slightly. He looked at Elena, who was watching him with wide, apprehensive eyes.
"I need to take this," Arthur said gently. "I'll be right outside the door."
He stepped out into the brightly lit, sterile hospital corridor. The hallway was empty save for a few nurses typing quietly at their stations. Arthur leaned against the cool tile wall and swiped to answer the call.
"What is it, Richard?" Arthur demanded, his tone entirely devoid of familial warmth.
"Arthur, my boy, you need to listen to me very carefully," Uncle Richard’s voice came through the speaker, sounding breathless and frantic. "You have made a terrible mistake. Margaret is on a warpath."
"Let her be," Arthur scoffed, rubbing his tired eyes. "She has no power here. The police took my statement at the hospital. They saw Elena's medical charts. If Margaret tries to press assault charges, she'll expose herself to a dozen felony charges of her own."
"You don't understand, Arthur," Richard pleaded. "She isn't going to the police. She's going to the lawyers. She's calling in every favor she has in this city. She's planning to file for emergency grandparents' rights. She’s claiming you are a violent, abusive husband who assaulted his own mother, and that Elena is deeply mentally unstable. She wants full custody of Leo."
Arthur felt a cold knot form in his stomach. The Bennett family was deeply entrenched in the local legal and political systems. Margaret had wealth, influence, and a terrifying ability to manipulate the truth. She could tie them up in brutal, agonizing litigation for years, draining their finances and their sanity.
"She has no grounds," Arthur argued, though a thread of doubt crept into his voice. "The medical records—"
"The medical records just show a woman who collapsed from exhaustion," Richard interrupted. "Margaret has a dozen witnesses—your own family members, Arthur—who are willing to sign affidavits saying Elena voluntarily cooked that meal and was acting erratic all day. They are terrified of Margaret. They will perjure themselves to protect her."
Arthur gripped the smartphone so tightly the glass screen protector creaked. His own family was conspiring to steal his son to protect a monster. The bright, perfect American facade they presented to the world was built on a foundation of absolute rot.
"Why are you telling me this, Richard?" Arthur asked, his eyes narrowing. "You were sitting right next to her at the table."
"Because I saw the look in your eyes when you hit her," Richard whispered, his voice trembling. "And I know that if she takes that baby, you will kill her. And I don't want to see my nephew go to prison."

"You tell Margaret something for me," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying calm. "You tell her to bring her lawyers. Bring her judges. Bring the whole damn family. If she comes for my son, I won't just hit her. I will burn her entire world to the ground."
He ended the call without waiting for a response and walked back into the hospital room, the war lines officially drawn.
