Chapter 8

The sterile, bright white lights of the hospital recovery room were a stark, clinical contrast to the warm, cinematic sunlight of their suburban home, but to Arthur, it felt like the safest place on earth. The rhythmic, steady beeping of the heart monitor was a beautiful symphony.

Elena lay in the elevated hospital bed, an IV line snaking into her left arm, delivering a steady stream of fluids and essential nutrients. Her fair, rosy skin was slowly regaining its natural color, though the dark circles under her eyes spoke to the immense trauma her body had endured. She was wearing a soft, hospital-issued gown, her dark hair brushed and tied back.

To her right, in a clear plastic hospital bassinet, Leo was finally sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, calming rhythm.

Arthur sat in an uncomfortable vinyl chair pulled right up to the edge of Elena’s bed. He was still wearing his business suit, though he had discarded the jacket and tie, and his dress shirt was wrinkled and stained with sweat. He held Elena’s right hand tightly in both of his, his thumb gently tracing the smooth skin of her knuckles.

Elena’s eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes. The glazed, terrified look was gone, replaced by a profound, overwhelming exhaustion. She looked at the white ceiling, then turned her head to see Arthur.

"Hey," Arthur whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye and rolling down his cheek. "You're okay. You're in the hospital. You're safe."

"Leo?" Elena croaked, her throat still incredibly dry.

"He's right here. He's sleeping," Arthur assured her, nodding toward the plastic crib. "He's perfectly fine, Elena. The doctors checked him out. He’s completely healthy."

Elena let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. She squeezed Arthur's hand weakly. "I'm so sorry, Arthur. I tried to tell her no. I tried to fight her, but she just... she took over everything."

"Don't you dare apologize," Arthur said fiercely, leaning forward to kiss her forehead. "This is my fault. I never should have gone on that business trip. I never should have left you alone so soon after the birth."

"She showed up the morning you left," Elena explained, tears welling up in her eyes as the memories flooded back. "She fired the postpartum doula we hired. She told her we didn't need her services anymore. And then... she just started inviting people over. Every day. She told me if I didn't host them properly, they would all think I was a terrible mother and a lazy wife."

Arthur’s jaw tightened, the muscles clenching so hard it hurt. The level of psychological manipulation Margaret had employed was staggering. She had weaponized a new mother's insecurity and exhaustion to break her down completely.

"I couldn't get to the baby, Arthur," Elena sobbed, the tears flowing freely now. "She would take him when people were here to show him off, and then lock him in the nursery and tell me I couldn't see him until the kitchen was clean. I thought I was going crazy."

"You are never going to see her again," Arthur promised, his American accent hard and resolute. "I swear to you on my life, Elena. Margaret is dead to us. She will never step foot near you or our son ever again."

"She said you would take her side," Elena whispered.

Arthur looked at his wife, remembering the sickening crack of his hand against his mother's face. "I think I made it very clear whose side I'm on."
