Chapter 1

My wedding ended before I opened the envelope.
That should tell you how Victoria looked when Clara handed it to me.
Four years old.
Dust on her flower-girl dress.
Baby in her arms.
Tears on her face.
“ADRIAN HALE — ONLY.”
My name.
Elena's handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
Victoria reached for it.
I moved it away.
She froze.
That was all I needed.
I pulled the wedding ring from my finger.
Dropped it at her feet.
“You knew what was inside before I opened it.”
Her face emptied.
“The wedding is over.”
The ballroom went silent.
Richard Ashford was still trying to get up beneath the broken seating-chart frame.
Victoria pushed herself out of the fallen wedding-card cabinet.
“You're ending our marriage over a filthy child and an old envelope?”
Clara flinched.
I looked at Victoria.
“Call her filthy again.”
She stared.
Then smiled.
“Look at her.”
Her voice turned cruel.
“She walks into a wedding carrying somebody else's baby, points at the groom, and suddenly everyone is supposed to worship her little tragedy?”
Clara tightened her arms around Mia.
Catherine moved closer.
My sister looked pale.
That bothered me.
I crouched in front of Clara.
“Who is Elena?”
Her lips trembled.
“Mommy.”
I knew that.
I needed the rest.
“Where is she?”
Clara looked down.
“Gone.”
My chest tightened.
“Gone where?”
She started crying.
Victoria sighed loudly.
“Oh, here we go.”
I turned.
She rolled her eyes.
“One question and she collapses.”
I stood.
“She is four.”
“And already knows tears make men stupid.”
I almost moved toward her.
Catherine caught my arm.
“Adrian.”
I looked at my sister.
She wasn't watching Victoria.
She was watching the envelope.
Another reaction.
Another person afraid of Elena's words.
I broke the seal.
Inside was one letter.
And a small brass key.
I unfolded the page.
Adrian,
If Clara reaches you, then everything I tried before has failed.
My throat tightened.
I kept reading.
She is your daughter.
The ballroom disappeared.
I looked at Clara.
Four years old.
My eyes.
Elena's mouth.
My daughter.
I looked back at the letter.
Mia is not yours.
But if Clara arrives carrying her, protect them both.
Victoria whispered:
“No.”
I slowly raised my head.
She had not heard the letter.
But somehow she knew which part had just destroyed me.
I looked at her.
“How did you know there were two children in it?”
May you like
Victoria stopped breathing.
And my wedding turned into an interrogation.
