Chapter 14

Avice eventually asked about Vanessa’s belly.

Not the lie.

The object.

“Where pillow?”

I almost laughed.

“Gone.”

“Why she wear?”

Harder.

I chose simple truth.

“She wanted people to think she had a baby.”

Avice frowned.

“No baby?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Because adults fear abandonment.

Because power rewards certain stories.

Because Diane built an entire succession argument around an unborn boy.

Too much.

“She was scared people wouldn’t keep loving her.”

Avice thought.

“So she pretend?”

“Yes.”

“Bad pretend.”

“Yes.”

Good enough.

Then:

“Did Daddy know?”

“No.”

“He sad?”

“Yes.”

Avice looked toward Julian, who was across the gallery speaking with a capo.

She waved.

He saw immediately.

Waved back.

That mattered.

Then she whispered:

“I still mad.”

“You can be.”

She seemed relieved.

Children need permission for anger too.

Not just forgiveness.

A week later, she drew another family picture.

This time Vanessa was absent.

No imaginary baby.

Julian was farther away from her than before.

I did not correct it.

Drawings are not diplomatic documents.

They are maps of feeling.

Julian saw it.

His eyes filled.

He said nothing.
