Chapter 16

Victoria left the Carter mansion without her engagement ring.

She placed it on the breakfast table herself.

I did not ask for a speech.

That annoyed her.

“You have nothing to say?”

I looked at the ring.

“No.”

She laughed.

“You think silence makes you frightening.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“I think you’ve heard yourself enough.”

Her face hardened.

Caleb left separately.

No rank.

No access.

No private channel to Carter business.

Nathan disappeared from our circle before sunset.

Nobody chased him.

Exile from relevance was enough.

The pantry cabinet was emptied.

Not destroyed.

I had Grace decide what stayed when she returned.

She kept my mother’s cup.

The old tray.

The recipe box.

Everything else went.

Two weeks later, Grace and Annie came back.

Not because I summoned them.

Because Grace chose to.

That mattered.

Annie walked into the kitchen wearing pink socks and carrying the same rabbit.

She stopped at the breakfast table.

I noticed immediately.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then looked at the butter.

I waited.

She climbed onto a chair.

“Can I watch you eat?”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

Grace closed her eyes.

I spread plain butter on toast from a fresh dish brought directly from the kitchen.

Nothing hidden.

Nothing prepared privately.

I took one bite.

Annie watched.

Then another.

She relaxed.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Grace.

“Mommy, he didn’t die.”

Grace made a sound halfway between laughter and crying.

I set the toast down.

That sentence should not have been funny.

But Annie laughed.

So eventually we did too.

Healing did not always arrive like forgiveness.

Sometimes it arrived when a child watched a normal breakfast happen twice and finally believed the pattern.
