Chapter 14

I removed Matteo’s influence without a war.
That disappointed half the old men who expected blood.
Good.
Blood is easy.
Structure is harder.
Every captain tied to Matteo had to choose openly.
No private council.
No invisible loyalty.
No neutral answers.
Most chose Ravello under me.
Three left with him.
Victor watched.
He understood the lesson.
Matteo had spent years assuming old respect meant permanent ownership.
It did not.
He looked at me before leaving.
“You think love made you stronger?”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
That surprised him.
“Love made me vulnerable.”
Silence.
I continued.
“But vulnerability is not the same as weakness.”
Matteo’s eyes hardened.
“That distinction gets men killed.”
“Maybe.”
I looked toward Isabella and Lucy.
“But pretending you have no vulnerable places gets everyone around you killed instead.”
He had no answer.
Victor did.
“You learned that from me?”
I turned.
“No.”
Then at Isabella.
“From what you did.”
That hurt him.
Good.
Victor lost command access too.
Not because he was identical to Matteo.
He wasn’t.
Victor had tried, in his way, to keep me alive.
But protection without consent becomes control.
Control without truth becomes betrayal.
I could not keep calling that loyalty because it had once helped me survive.

But because the true parts are no longer enough.
